TOKYO (Reuters) - Sony Corp is considering developing a cellphone-game gear hybrid in a bid to better compete with Apple Inc's highly popular iPod and iPhone, the Nikkei business daily said on Saturday.
The Japanese electronics and entertainment conglomerate launched its first Walkman three decades ago, dominating the portable music player market, but it has been running far behind the iPod and iPhone in recent years.

Sony plans to set up a project team as early as July to develop a new product that combines functions of its portable game player and Sony Ericsson's mobile phones, the Nikkei said.

Sony Ericsson is a cellphone joint venture between Sony and Sweden's Ericsson.

A growing number of game-makers including Capcom Co Ltd and Square Enix Holdings are now offering software for the iPod and iPhone to take advantage of the Apple products' popularity, posing a threat to Sony's PlayStation Portable and Nintendo Co Ltd's DS.

A Sony spokesman declined to comment on the report.

Here's small subject change. I think that everyone who has X1 know, that earlier this year there was a leak of R3 firmware for xperia. It had new panel manager, "growing" panel, new Media Panel and some more new things. After short time Sony Ericsson have made R3 firmware available through SEUS, but there was only few bugs fixed and no sign of all the novelties from the leaked R3. How come the release name is the same? I think the answer is on the youtube video below... The quality is really poor, but I think it's "X2" Vulcan (i know it says so on the startup screen, but I'm speaking about the overal design of the handset). Wondering what is the firmware number? It's R3. I think that the ROM that has leaked earlier this year was just an early build for the Vulcan + WinMob 6.5. It's just an idea, but it might be the reason why the released R3 doesn't have all the novelties. The only problem is that the info tab still shows the old platform (MSM7200) I really hope they will use the hardware from the rumoured Rachael...

Could be. The good news is, since a beta release was installed on the X1, I am very sure a lot of the new X2 stuff will be portable to the X1 as well!

And honestly, I don't think the specs will be drastically different between the X1 and X2. If HTC can continue to release a two year old chipset, why not Sony Ericsson? I hope SE proves me wrong however.

There's some more leaked images of Kiki and Rachael leaked by the_laser on Se-nse (the guy who originally leaked Rachael). This includes a video. As usual though, he limits the amount of people who see them to 10 people. Anyone got them and want to post them here?

They haven't hit news sites yet as far as I can tell.
