Also , vista basic itself runs ok on 256 mb ram.
sorry but i don't believe this

my friend has a neo pentium D based laptop with 384Mb ram and it runs vista basic like snail. (the moment i installed netbeans 6.1 there the whole laptop ended up miserably slow)

it'd runs fine if you disable all graphics gloss and strip it back to Windows 2000 look alike. Disable services such as system restore, indexing, UAC, security centre, antivirus realtime scanner, etc etc. But I agree netbeans would run like a dog no matter what you do. But netbeans takes a bit of grunt. Most average word/internet/email users would get by fine.
Spot on. Thats what my friend does, he works it on his system which has got 256mb ram. Hm.. dont know how well it runs, but he says its ok.
But still i think you guys do get my point, that a whole OS which is over 3gb, needs a minimum requirement of 512mb ram(just checked the min requirements).
So wm7 would be strange to imagine using 512mb ram, in 2009.

It would not have been done so with a view to upgrading to WM7 as if it was then an accelerometer would have been included too as WM7 will support hand based gestures.
Supposedly, WM7 will not explicitly require an accelerometer, but can make use of camera based gestures. In the same sense that desktop windows makes no distinction between mouse, trackball, glidepoint (they all have the same end result) perhaps WM7 will have the option of camera gestures and/or accelerometer?

Yea still not sure about the practicality of using a camera to act as a sensor for gestures, can't imagine having the camera on permanently to detect movement when an accelerometer will achieve the same and better result all while consuming alot less battery power. That being said I am also pretty sure WM7 won't explicitly require a sensor to detect hand gestures, just a feature that can be taken advantage of if the hardware is present.

I found this:

Could some X1/ past P1 user comment about screen difference (viewing pictures, etc.).

I was looking at some WM software for the X1 on Handango and I noticed a few games that use the camera for gesture recognition (I think it was a golf game and a bowling game). Maybe those will give some idea of how effective a camera-based gesture recognition system would work?
Does the camera by itself consume a lot of power? I think that whenever a camera is in use, the screen and CPU are in a constant cycle of updating live video. That alone seems to be a major contributor to power drainage. So, eliminate the live-video component and how much power is being consumed by the camera itself?

Not properly clued up on optics but do know that there has to be some sort of contrast for a camera to accurately sense movement, hence why it wouldn't work in pitch darkness where an accelerometer would. Obviously, the screen wouldn't be refreshing full screen or anything but I would imagine in lower light alot of cpu power would be spent trying to accurately focus and sense contrast changes in relation to movement.

Well, I guess that all depends on what the CMOS/CCD sensors are "seeing". Maybe what they see natively is sufficient to detect motion without any additional processing (just guessing)?
