no the problem with her mac was combination of no free disk space, and some other error (not hardware - forget what it was now) - basically memory problems
Like I said I agree windows is more sensitive - and if it get's to the point that it has to be reinstalled then there is some faulty software been installed at some stage that hasn't properly removed itself, or a bad sector on the hard drive (meaning format of drive required) or something similar.
I haven't re-installed windows other than due to hardware errors in a long time. But even so windows maintenence can be a bit of an art. Especially if you like to try different software alot - if I install some dodgy software that causes a problem I can usually get rid of it proplerly, but the average user is probably better off just reinstalling.
But if you get your system the way you like and then leave it that way and ony add stuff you need from time to time (new hardware, software updates etc) it is rare you will need to reinstall. However if you like always changing your system and tweaking then you should be prepared to google when you get problems and fix things rather than format - that way you will slowly learn the system inside out and you will find you get very good at fixing windows.

I definitely want one. I'd like to run linux. Mac OS I want to try and install on a Pentium system, just to see how it's done.
But I need to upgrade my current lappie so I'll have to concentrate on finding a good Windows laptop first.
