to be honest this does not surprise me. if SE are ever going to catch up nokia in terms of market share then we have to accept that models like this are going to appear.
It makes very sound business sense to release this phone. First off your 'average joe' will probably not realise that this is EXACTLY the same as the W800i - they will see the new name and new colour and assume it is a new/different phone. It is only us (who are the minority) who are knowledgable about phones that will notice this is EXACTLY the same as the W800i. Secondly we all want SE to improve so quite your moaning. This model means more profit for SE as let's face it development costs are hardly going to have broke the bank
I think the W800i will stop bein produced as it will be replaced by the w810i. The w700i will be aimed at the PAYG market - where i think it will do very well.
As for coments like it annoys me because i bought my w800i to be unique and have phone that not many people have - well yes this was the case for a few months but SE is always going to move on and do new phones, change phones pricing etc to make you want to go out and get their latest and greatest models.

I believe Sony Ericsson should stick to more of an unique/satisfying plan. When I purchased my W800, I loved it because no one at my school had a phone like the W800. Made me feel like Sony Ericsson's are high class cellphones. But, W700 is coming out. The W810 is being picked up by Cingular. Super special now? Makes me think Sony Ericsson as any other brand.

Fair enough we all want to have the latest and the best stuff that not many other people have. But lets remember that it isn't exactly good news for SOnyEricsson if no one else has their products. Their goal is to sell as many handsets as possible and to make as much money as possible - you can't blame them for trying to acheive this.
And in all fairness the w800i was never meant to be a super high-ednd phone like the nokia 8800. It was always meant to be a mass market device. You want something more unique then get the P990i when it comes out.

ok ok what is the point of the w700 really. less smaller memory card, no autofocus, new color. was thinking why not release different color housings for the w800 instead. and what will happen to the w800, will they pull it off shelves? the w800 still appeals to alot of people even as the w810 is out, and how much cheaper will the 700 be compared to the 800.
i am kind of disappointed with se for the release of this phone, reminds me of the black razr followed by the pink one.

Yes, the W700i will be available in white as well, in selected markets.

The release of W700 would be the end of W800.
There's no point in keeping W800 in the market when a completely identical W700 (the smooth white version) is going to be introduced and an almost similar product W810 is already available. The exit of W800 from store shelves should also prevent confusion among phone buyers.
