One more question, would XP actually be noticeably faster on a Core2Duo processor than on the older Pentium M processor? I know XP wasn't actually written to utilise dual-core processors, whereas Vista is. So if I actually get a Core2Duo notebook running on XP, would a be a waste of the dual-core processor or would there actually be a significant difference in speed compared to a Pentium M processor?
Yes I'd say it'd be a waste of the core2duo cpu. XP really only uses one core, which is why any XP users running with dual core cpus should really upgrade...although i feel sorry for them having to see all that really bloaty gui! xp isn't too bad once you've changed things back to how they used to be (the start menu --> classic, the looks --> classic...etc etc) and I actually quite like it. My computer is totally fine for me at the moment! Infact, it starts a heck of a lot faster than most other computers I've seen! (well...I do put it into hibernation instead which helps a bit!)
basically, if your going with xp and don't want to update your os in the future to a dualcore capable one, go with a fast single-core set up. If otherwise - you know what you wanna do! The other thing is, if you go for a core2duo notebook - you can run mac os x on these

lol

@awave, thanks for the information! You've been very helpful. If only XP could take advantage of the dual-core processors, I'm sure it'll be so much faster! I like it cos it's been pretty stable for me. Well I guess now the only thing that would speed up XP would be more ram.

Yup, you're right, Johnex, and I will get Vista. I only asked out of curiosity. Better to get hardware that can support the newer operating systems. Thanks for your help too!
