For me it isn't as i am using 160kbps AAC which is the best quality offered by the Nokia Music Manager and higher than the best quality offered by Disc 2 phone MP3.
I am just not prepared to spend ages re ripping my Music when the Nokia app works so well and produces such good quality. I am referring to those that use the lowest bitrates in the desire to get as much as possible in the smallest space and in doing so compromise the quality.
I don't think any one would claim 160kbps AAC is over compressed and lacking in quality. I would try higher encoded tracks but i doubt the improvement would warrant all the extra work and as i am happy with quality the way it is so just can't be bothered. I only carry 6-7 albums around at a time on a 2gb card as the rest has Doc's , pictures and Films plus of course storage space. But if i wanted additional albums i would either buy an additional card or delete Films i wouldn't lower the bitrates and compress the music as that really would be pointless IMO. If the Music isn't good whats the point in listening to it how many albums you have means nothing .

fair enough, just that personally I prefer encoding at 192AAC or VBR MP3s as I perceive that there's a big gap in between quality for tracks encoded in 160KBps and below as opposed to 192KBps and above. the treble seems lacking in the 'inferior' bitrates.
but then, that is still my personal listening opinion. I don't use the equalizer on my media players as I prefer a natural sounding sound. maybe you've tried the bitrates before, and found your default bitrate to be a good compromise to your liking. in that case, it's only good as you do settle for the more economical choice

the product announcement just happened, why not consider the T650i? it's got a 3.2MP camera with a/f, and in my experience the normal media players that come with non-Walkman phones doesn't lose out in sound quality. plus it also comes with a 256MB M2 card.

oo thx for showing so much support bros. um. lol. t650 is a nice phone but the music is really as gd as W series? i mean i really respect the W series for their music quality and i really like the W sign.. is there gonna be a camera version of w950i cos.. i would love to get that..

and regarding walkman player's difference from the generic media player, some say the lack of Megabass, but that I think can be adjusted from the equalizer. other than that, I don't feel any huge difference, if any at all, between the sound output. there are also threads discussing the difference in sound between W series phones and other series, i.e. K series. do have a look?
on the indexing used by SE, one can safely assume that K is for Cybershot or imaging series, W is obviously for Walkman. As for the others, P series is business devices, while T and S series as batesie mentioned is probably for 'emotional' range.

Yeah its fair, its still an Ipod and the old 20gb Ipod beats some current phones in sound quality.
Some six year old Sony televisions beat current televisions out on the market in picture and sound quality.
