I don't think I have ever used the optical cable as I've never had (or at least wasn't aware I had) anything with optical output except for a recent Sony DVD player
I'm pretty sure the MZ5 only plays atrac. if you copy mp3 directly it doesn't see them in the music directory

You can see them in the file directory (using mobile explorer) but I get an error beep when I try to open them.
So I'd have to convert any music to atrac first. I have installed Sonicstage but it never seems to stop updating my directory. Its still going after 15 mins and I haven't got that much music on my laptop really. I guess I'll have to use another converter.

its all starting to come back to me slowly.
I only just last week unpacked the MZ5 after it got shipped with a load of other boxes of our stuff from Aus where it was in storage for quite a while.
I do now vaguelly recall using a small Sony portable CD player with optical output to record directly onto the phone. I'm sure the phone didn't come with any software like sonic stage and certainly there is none in the box now.
The MZ5 only supports magicgate memory stick and not the standard memory stick and this usually means you would need to have the phone attached when you convert the music as the magicgate DRM makes it only usable for that phone. you can't take the memory stick out and use it in another device
just trying hard to remember if I actually ever did it from pc. I know I only every transferred music a couple of times ever as it wasn't long before I got my next phone (as usual!) and this got stuffed in the draw

hmmm. I might be wrong about needing to have the phone connected to the pc (although I'm pretty sure you can do it with the phone connected too). I found this
msgc-us10 accessory which lets you transfer music directly to the memory stick only
This also reminded me the software to use is OpenMG Jukebox software to convert the mp3 and this can be downloaded from
here at Sony for free
btw, although some of the content is gone there is still a homepage for the
CMD-MZ5

Personally I still have a slight hanker for my old Sony J7, the best phone I owned pre k750i I think - I loved the old jog dial for navigation of the menus etc, shame they didn't keep it on when it became SE (although I think it's on the w960i?).
