OK, fair point, but for average "knows no better " joe, they will activate it and they will end up with an 18 month contract and for that value it's insanely high priced.
My point being, if you look at it from the contract perspective, it's a stupidly expensive phone.
Yes, if you look at it from the aspect of buying it and then never using it, it's a good buy, but doesn't it need to be activated or else you can't use it with any of apples services?

@Daedalus85
Well that again is not quite true you can buy it for £269 then get a special 02 PAYG iPhone Sim activate as normal and just use the Web features via WiFi only and just pay PAYG talk charges.
As a BT broad band customer i get 250 Min's a month free WiFi use at certain hot spots and whilst not ideal is a lot cheaper than £35pm for 18 months.
I do agree the base 02 package @£35pm is insanely expensive for what it is and am sure part of the reason is the % of charges 02 have to pay Apple.

I think the tariffs aren't that bad, it's the price of the phone on that tariff.
As for this 'specialy activated' O2 pay as you go sim card, given I work for them, I've never heard head nor tail of this, care to elabourate?

Indeed i can't see mention of the PAYG option anywhere, in fact the purchase options even negate cash buyers.

Hi all,
Well i didn't make it up i called 02 on this number 0800 970 8702 and said i was interested in the soon to be launched iPhone and wondered what happened if i bought one but failed the credit check?
Could i then just put in a normal 02 or PAYG Sim and was told that would not work i would need to request a special iPhone PAYG Sim call your self and see what they say. But that was the information i received yesterday morning after which i reported it here.
Despite what many of you think i still don't believe that 02 have the right to refuse to sell you an unlock code, but only time will tell on this one.

Well thats interesting, and news to me, thanks for that.
I suppose it makes sense, the same kind of thing happens when we go into contingency at work (if the credit check system goes down and we can't check people), we literally have to accept everyone and then credit check them later. Most of them usually come back as declines and the customer gets away with a free phone because we couldn't credit check them.
