well. i dont think it overload your internal memory or CPU.
it looks more like it send a well designed bug(virus) to your UI and there by turn your phone off......like a Trojan

virus in GIF? it's just a file with somehow corrupted structure. GIF decoder library cannot handle error properly and buffer overflow occurs

first of all its possible to hide virus inside ex GIF, JPEG, etc.......
its called "steganography" and is sometimes used to transmit secretly encrypted messages......a Virus is nothing more than information, so its possible to "encode" it into a GIF file and transmit it this way.
one tool for steganography is Trojan 1.0. (its a software made for hiding data inside; jpg, gif, etc....)
however. im not saying this is the case here

(it was just a idea)

huh! why are people talking about malware?
"This is the gif image that will crash or restart your SE phone"
there's a much easier way to crash your SE phone - just use it.

Plank, I know about steganography but you can only hide information. what next? you have to decode hidden information and in this case execute malware code in the phone. do you suggests that SE has opened the door that would allow such action? this would be tremendous violation of safety rules by SE. ok, I know it's just idea

still, lt looks like a some kind of bug to me

(it crash the phone because its something inside that gif image who f**ks up the UI....thats my idea)
besides, quite funny how easy its with jpeg,

gif is a bit harder because there you use a small bit color-information for each pixel inside the GIF file to store the data, and thats without visibly altering the quality of the image
