Yes you can use http://www.nav4all.com free of charge until 1-1-2010 but it is an offboard system so it uses your phones 3g/GPRS data connection to download the maps

@Matt

No one here can tell you which phone to get.

Especially if you are trying to decide between totally different phones like these, you have to try them and decide yourself which form factor, UI and specs suit your taste and needs best.

If I had no experience with navigation, just from what I've read I would go for the G900 based on the fact that there are more options available for it.
As @Myth has pointed out, these are completely different systems. The general consensus is that smartphone users in general don't care too much about the iPhone but at the end it's your choice. The bigger screen of the iPhone may be an advantage but I'm not sure about the rest.

if you want gps for walking around london then maybe you should just try google maps for the g900? no need for gps - it will give you a rough idea them you can just search for a street name?

and needing a data connection to download maps shouldn't be a problem. IMHO a smartphone is wasted without an unlimited data plan...

But the point is, with Garmin, TomTom and Sygic Drive you don't need to use a data connection unless you want to use some special features like weather etc. I prefer that over having to rely on a data connection.
There are also some other niceties that are most likely not available for the iPhone+PC combination.
Garmin allows you to work on your PC and transfer routes, itineraries etc. to your device or TomTom can make use of a program called Tyre and route locations obtained directly from Google Earth. I've found that the PC connection can be very convenient when planning a route.

Well, I had a play with the new iPhone in the o2 store in Oxford Street today and... oooh...it is very lovely....

Tried playing with the GPS and because it was indoors (and tied to the desk!), the actual GPS wasn't working and only the a-GPS was on, so it just gave me a large blue circle to indicate whereabouts I was, which was a bit frustrating, as I would have loved to have seen the actual GPS pinpoint my exact location.

Liked the interface and everything, but wonder if the on-screen QWERTY is quite fiddly to use, and whether I'd get used to it...

Still confused

If I had just these 2 to consider I'd choose the 16Gb iPhone in a heartbeat for its HSDPA, enormous internal memory and onboard GPS. Yes, I may have to give up the freedom to install apps but it's a good tradeoff for a stable, fast system

G900 is better in my opinion... It is smartphone, has better features than iPhone. Better (way better indeed) camera and great posibilities for modding while with iphone you get NOTHING.
