I don't envy the decision you'v got. The crazy thing is the manufacturers keep cramming more megapixels into these camera phones and on such a small sensor the quality will degrade as digital noise starts to increase. It's just a sales gimmick but it's worked on point and shoot cameras so it'll continue on phones. I'd say 5 megapixels is the sensible limit. The lens will always limit picture quality.
Good luck with what you choose in the end.
Agree 5 megapix is my standard W995 shot setting , 8 megapix doesn't really bring that much to the table.

As promised, Elm vs W995 shots. First a night shot of a plant using Flash & AF light. All other settings Auto, +0.0. You can see the big difference between the LED flash of the Elm & W995 :
Elm plant shot - night
W995 plant shot - night
Next a mixed light shot, bright flourescent & darkness. Flash on, all other settings Auto, +0.0. I actually tried taking this same shot with no flash - the Elm almost didn't make it, taking 5-7 seconds to focus. The w995 took about 2-2.5 seconds.
Elm mixed light shot
W995 mixed light
Bookshelf night shot with poor flourescent lighting, flash on. Note the yellow tint in the W995 shot which often occurs with flourescent. (you can compensate using the Flourescent light shot setting but I decided to keep it Auto). Elm colors are truer & sharper (which is generally the case)
Elm book shelf shot
W995 book shelf shot
Building shot at lunchtime, all settings auto (no flash of course) +0.0. Note here that the W995 sky is brighter. I'm more convinced that the W995 takes in more light than the Elm.
Elm building shot
W995 building shot
Lunch shot
Indoors with incandescent lighting mixed with cloudy light from the outside. All auto, no flash, +0.0

Movies taken at lunchtime , W995 & Elm were side by side taking a movie shot of the same street scene. Elm wins this hands down, no contest.

well, this shows how little some people(no names) understand cameras.....
ELM have bigger issues to adjust the whitebalance and EV..............this is just stupid to read.......w995 looks better with flash, outdoor, indoor well everything.
ELM.....way to dark.
w995
ELM.....is this a joke ????
W995
ELM............
HORRIBLE COLOURS, JUST HORRIBLE
W995.......TEN TIMES BETTER COLOURS, (like ive been saying all time)

Most of those problems can be fixed with EV.
And Plank, the colours doesn't matter a shit as long as you can't have a proper sharp image.

@NoroBiik.
Thank you very much for taking the time to do this, but the results push me towards the W995 to be honest.
The dictionary on the book shelf is closer to the real colour in the W995 shots.

The Elm really does much better in good to excellent light, as TTT mentioned EV adjustment can fix shots like the building one. The flash in the Elm/Hazel is really poor, this is one of the places where SE decided to shave costs to get the price down. And there is something not quite right in the way in the way the Elm gathers ambient light in low to poor light conditions.
Given good to excellent lighting there is no way the W995 can beat the Elm (unless you use a modded driver maybe, don't know I can't seem to install Brazzuka's W995 cam mod). If you browse the Elm snapshot thread, you"ll note that the great majority of these were taken in good lighting.
Just give yourself more time to weigh the pros & cons - I"ll take another series of comparative shots, this time with good light and with optimum settings, to balance things out. You should know exactly what you"ll gain (or miss) whichever choice you take.

i think w995 camera is very similar to c905. (same great colour rendition, etc) if i guess, the only difference between c905 and w995 (camera) is the Cybershot branding.

Quote from GsmArena's review of W995.
So what's up with the picture quality? Unlike the 8 megapixel Cyber-shot C905 - whose photos astonished us - the W995 suffers a similar problem to all other Walkman phones: the pictures are noisy and oversharpened, and the lively colors and contrast are gone. Another old friend makes an appearance here too - the purple fringing on the edge of buildings. Even the picture detail is less than on the C905.
