Arc has no place for none compact phones these days of giant phones era and sony won't use arc design just for the compact because z design is unified. the next step of omnibalance is keep perfecting the design like:
1. water and dust proof usb port
2. shortening the bezel/profile even more
3. adopting of a new chassis and front glass material which should be either some kind of unique metal chassis with higher resistance then current used glass, harder glass, or sapphire glass which is unrealistic for sony to use atm because of cost reasons.
^^ there are criticism from some consumers regarding these 3 points - "the glass is too fragile", votes for even shorter bezels and annoyance of usb port flaps.
sony should listen.

A company that designed the arc, the NXT & the OmniBalance among other older ones can and definitely able to design something else that looks and feel amazing
It's better than reusing an old design ( while I liked the all of these three )... as others ( not us esato'ers ) will just say ( oooh Sony is out of design ideas to re use their old ones )
The point is, Sony already is working on different design for Z3, but as rumored before they found it to be hard to make and costly also, so they fall back to the drawing board, and just added more perfection to the OB design in Z3... we all know and can't disagree that the OB design evolved nicely starting with Z, Z1, Z2 and at the end Z3...

@Xajel
Agreed. my 4. point is creating a completely new design which is feasible that also addresses 1-3.

I think the evolution of the Omibalance design has been great, however with my Z3 I've noticed how much more slippy the phone is when compared to my Z1. There are only 2 thing I'd like to see in the Z4, a light textured back panel or a curved one similar to the old Xperia Neo to give either better grip or a more comfortable one handed use and the S-Master digital amp that is an absolute must especially if HTC are getting Bose to help them with their audio for the M9.

I agree with the s-master digital amp, or get Harman Kardon.

To who?
What do you or I know about hardware design that Sony don't?
Aesthetics are important, which is why I think the Z series of phones have been so successful. They are simple and elegantly designed smartphones. There are no weird angles or lines or anything. Everything is smooth and clean. Understated, yet striking. The Z3 in bronze looks astonishing, for example.
Leaving aside aesthetics, every inch of the phone will be crammed with technology. Not much room for excessive design flourishes. So there isn't going to be much room for change in any case.
I predict that the Z4, will be a rectangular slab, with at least 1 side covered with smooth, hardened, scratch-resistant glass. The rest will be some combination of metal, plastic or glass.

Hmm, what? Sony should listen to consumers who are criticizing things about the products they are selling. sony should not think everything is perfect with the design, else they will not evolve as a company and will get bad reviews. i love z3 design but there are things that can
always be improved, changed or refreshed like the points i mentioned.
what do i know? you ask a rhetorical questions if i understand you correct, if not do ask again. I simply have a constructive realistic criticism for what can be improved about z3 design. i don't need to study at the university how to manufacture a smartphone to be able to have constructive criticism. i have a brain, as we all do.
