Sweet on the price cut, must be due to competition estimated pricing of the upcoming iPhone model to be announced in a few weeks. Still quite expensive on the Z5C pricing it should come down to about $599CA/$499US to make volume units in sales, which may lower their per unit profits but Volume is the game these days.

Volume:
Helps economies of scale, thus reducing costs for production, thus increasing profits per unit sales (think 2ND QTR profits)
Helps Brand Name Recognition (Marketing 101)!! A brand that is recognized is also the one that is sought out the most.
increase efforts for efficient customer service support lines. In other words lessen support hold music and times, allow users in 3mins or less to speak to an actual sales rep/support rep/licensed technician for issues!
Increase quality controls!!! This means LESS issues with ownership, less sales support rep calls for returns/repairs, LESS perception of the Brand Quality affecting quality perception. Remember Sony doesn't just make TV's, video games, and smartphones ... one brand perceived as poor quality affects ALL product sales and services!!!!!!!!

Profits (on initial release):
When pricing is too high vs exisiting entrants and increase competition, sure you get higher per unit profits, yet you don't have the volume to affect costs in your supply chain!! This affects YOU as a business (going-concern): Look at what has happened to HTC at the very core no change too high in retail pricing per region, lost volume sales.

Why is it only Sony have to lower their prices in order to reach higher volume?
The iPhone 6 16GB costs 150 USD more. No one seems to complain really.
Sony need to really show the North American people that they mean business and put bilboard ads here and there and appear a lot more often in bigger events.

Price cut is a UK only deal for now, don't expect any other country to follow. The prices should fall slowly once the device is released, always the case for android devices.

The biggest issue is not the price but the availability, it takes too long for Sony to get their devices to market. 3-4 weeks may not be long for some people. but somehow apple is able to announce a phone and have it ship pretty quickly soon after.

I think it's quite common that you have to wait before new phone physically enters the market. There's nothing wrong with it unless it takes too long (over a month or something).

@Supa_Fly
I think you're wrong. On this market volume doesn't really mean profit. There many more variables and price cut is not enough to increase the volume. What it does for sure is that it decreases the profit. With chinese manufacturers being more and more aggressive you just can't compete with the price, it doesn't work. You need a proper device and good marketing strategy, then you can reach more volume even at regular price. Flagship buyers can easily spend $100 or even $150 more (S6 edge is a good example) when you make them feel that it's worth it. And that means profit. That's what Sony fails to do.
