While I agree with you that theft is wrong, and somebody has been caused a loss by this incident, I do not think that diddy should have given the phone back.
If any normal person makes a mistake and loses their phone because of it.. do they expect to get it back? I dont think they do.
And the shop in question did just that, made a mistake and lost a phone. I say tough luck on them!
Everyone should have insurance.. thats what it's there for. To guard against mistakes or unfortunate events.

San Francisco, Imports alot, I MEAN A LOT of items directly from japan. The STORY IS TRUE. YES I DID RETURN IT. NOT JUST BECAUSE I GOT FLAMED TO HELL ON THIS FORUM, BUT BECAUSE OF MY PARENTS, WHO TOLD ME TO RETURN IT. HOW MANY PEOPLE HERE IF THEY FOUND A WALLET, WITH MONEY IN IT, WOULD RETURN THE WALLET TO IT'S RIGHTFUL OWNER? NOT MANY. I KNOW MANY WOULD SAY THEY WOULD BLAH BLAH BLAH, BUT I DON'T BELIEVE SO. TO ALL YOU WHO CALLED ME A THIEF. FUCK YOU. I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU CALL ME. I DIDN'T KEEP THE PHONE, EVEN IF I WOULD HAVE, I STILL WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN A THIEF. THEY LOST MY PHONE,THERE FORE THEY OWE ME ANOTHER ONE. SIMPLE AS THAT. IF I WOULDN'T HAVE GOTTEN MY OLD PHONE BACK, I WOULD HAVE KEPT IT. WOULDN'T YOU? I MEAN, A COMPANY LOSES YOUR PHONE, BUT YOUR THE BAD GUY FOR KEEPING A PHONE THEY OWED YOU? FOR SOME REASON, PEOPLE ARE THINKING BIG CORPORATIONS GIVE A DAMN ABOUT CONSUMERS LIKE US. THEY DON'T. THE FIRST CHANCE THEY GET THEY RIP US OFF. (EXAMPLE: OPEC, TABACCO COMPANIES, ALL CELL PHONE PROVIDERS) SO THE ONE TIME WE GET A CHANCE TO GET BACK AT THEM, WE ARE THE BAD GUYS? YOU THINK THEY WOULD REALLY HAVE LOST MUCH OUT OF ONE PHONE? THE WAY I SEE IT, IF THEY WOULD NEVER HAVE LOST MY PHONE, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN AN EVEN TRADE. I WENT FOR AN UPGRADE, AND LEFT WITH AN UPGRADE-PHONE. I DON'T CARE WHAT PEOPLE THINK OF ME ANYMORE, I LOOK OUT FOR MYSELF AND MY FAMILY. I'M NOT SELFISH, BUT I'M NOT GOING TO GET STEPPED ON ALL MY LIFE FROM BIG COMPANIES.

I was looking for a P900, when I came across a T630. I almost jumped up and down at the thought of getting this new phone. So I said, "it was this one!" and pointed at the T630.

mate, you are unbelievable.
the guy offered you fair trade for your lost T-616 and you made a conscious decision to lie and rip him off. don't try to twist it any other way. he played straight with you, you didn't. SIMPLE AS THAT.

have you ever heard of mental anguish? when they lost my phone, i not only was mad, frustrated, and upset, they also lost my sim card. SO, i think it was a fair trade, for the frustration they caused me. They weren't going to give me a new sim card. that's money lost. i see it as an even trade. Even so, i'm back to how I used to be, no one lost out of nothing, or gained anything, (well I might have gained something: a software upgrade) but the point is, i think i shall forget this whole fighting with everyone here, and give it up. I'm never going to beat goody too shoes, no matter how 2 faced they are.

i think you probably could have got them to pay for a new sim card, although i won't deny it might have been a challenge. and i hope you'll forgive me if i remain unconvinced on the mental anguish (it is just a phone after all, it's not like they lost an old family heirloom which originated with your great great grandfather).
however, as i tried to point out above it's not so much that you stole the phone but that you then tried to take the moral high ground when you returned it by blaming everything but yourself. one of my pet hates in society today is that people refuse to be responsible for their actions. it's great that you took it back, but don't try to blame them for your weakness in the first place. you were the one that broke the law, not them. sure, they made a mistake but that's no excuse. that's where road rage and other of society's evils begins. "i'm sorry your honour, but if he hadn't accidentally cut me off i wouldn't have been forced to beat him to a slimy pulp with a baseball bat and sodomise his rotting corpse".
it's great that you returned the phone, although not so great that it was because your folks told you rather than your own remorse. if you're going to be dishonest then fine, but at least be honest about your dishonesty.
one final thing. don't call me two-faced. it's true you really have no idea about my morality, but as someone smarter than me once said: "don't judge me by your own base standards". it's also true that most people wouldn't be so honest as to return a lost wallet or phone. but remember, the next time you hear about someone who does it will probably be me. be gentle, it's tough being the last of a species
damn these splinters

Good on you for returning it, but stuff the others on this thread- I would have kept it if I were you.
Companies like that intergrate losses like that into their profits.
Bring on free phones from STUPID costomer service individuals with no brains!!

You really have no reason to blow toy top at us mate.
You said it yourself in the heading: You Are Going To Hate Me... But I actually don't think anybody does hate you.

well I can see many different angles in this discussion and I can see the temptation to keep the T630 but this is probably how I would have approached it, and indeed have done so on a previous occassion although it was then nothing to do with phones.
Since the shop lost the phone and offered a replacement in the form of the T630, I believe the T630 then became the property of diddy fair and square and that deal was then final as neither party clearly expected to see the T610 again (otherwise why would the shop offer the T630?)
When the shop then found the T610 and called to let him know, its clear that person calling didn't know about the T630 offer so diddy should have pointed out that he had received that phone as compensation, was happy with that, and the shop should now keep the T610 to do with as they please. That should have been the end of the matter for everyone.
Also consider if the shop found the T610 after 1 week, 1 month or longer. Would diddy still have had to return the T630 for the T610? I don't think so since the shop had already claimed responsibility and acted fairly.
Anyway thats not how it happened and diddy was certainly upset and we all react irrationally sometimes when emotions come into play.

i agree with massuer the shop lost his phone and replaced it with a t630, but when he found his old t610 diddy should have said something to the assistant in the shop
