think also they mention at news conference that ericsson has shut down its bluetooth division - not clear yet what the implications, if any, are.

Well, they are different though. EDGE, like GPRS, runs on a GSM network

WCDMA, UMTS, 3g, runs on, well, a WCDMA network.

GSM first used CSD, later GPRS, EDGE is the same kind of upgrade to an existing network

WCDMA will eventually get HSDPA, which will be a similar upgrade as EDGE

just upgrades, and EDGE should deliver around 100 kB/s, which isn't too bad in my book
