Although having previously loathed the clamshell form factor, it appears Nokia has newfound love for the design which for so many years was banished from the handset maker's portfolio. The 7270 being its fifth clamshell, Nokia picks up where it left off with its very first one: the 7200. You guessed it - textile covers are making a comeback (to be specific, though, it's suede this time around).
A bit on the sizeable side, the 7270 measures in at 88 x 46 x 22 mm and weighs a hefty 21 g - in other words no match for recent offerings from Samsung, but fully on par with models such as Sony Ericsson's Z600. A clamshell design, the 7270 has what appears to be one of the sturdiest hinges we've seen, which allows for a smooth and springy opening and closing of the handset - complete with that oh-so-satisfying 'snap'.
The outside of the handset is rather anemic, however it is worth noting that the 7270 offers the same kind of exchangeable covers as the 7200; red or black suede snap-on covers come in the sales package. These fit neatly around what could only be described as an excellent (and very bright) external colour display with a resolution of 96 x 65 pixels. Also, a 0.3 MP camera lens is placed so that users can utilize both the external and internal displays as viewfinders.
The real surprise comes when opening the handset, however. Upon doing so, the attention is immediately drawn to the large, internal colour display, which at a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels and 16-bit colour depth is the best we've seen in a Nokia handset to date (smartphones withstanding). Based on active TFT technology, it's very vivid, crisp, bright and quite simply a pleasure to behold.
Similar praise is also bestowed upon the lower half, containing the usual Nokia keypad arrangement in an edition where keys are flush with the surface: not only is it highly comfortable, but looks dead stylish as well. The only minor snag is that the action button of the navigational pad would benefit from being raised, but due to obvious design circumstances this is quite impossible.
Not to be fooled by appearances, however, the 7270 also features quite a few advanced features under its glossy exterior. True, the camera is only of the 0.3 Megapixel variety, but it does come with support for some of the latest technologies such as Wireless Village based instant messaging, push-to-talk and J2ME MIDP 2.0. Also, it boasts a Pop-Port interface, an infrared port and not only GPRS, but also EDGE for high-speed data connectivity. There's even an integrated FM radio.
Overall, the 7270 is a rather capable fashion phone, which thankfully doesn't entirely forsake brains for good looks. The primary selling point remains its design, but only marginally so as a slew of advanced features greatly increase the overall appeal of the handset - and also mitigate the fact that it's a bit on the large side.
