What could happen is they could use MPEG4 compression and make the format AAC thus ensuring high quality and smaller file sizes.
This method (if used) will be much like the iPod's. To me it sounds good since you can cram a helluva lot into an iPod using AAC format.

Yes, i agree!
Sony Ericsson might be developing some new compressed format, or some new software/hardware designed to cope with music. Much like having a camera, there might be a special sound part inside these new phones designed for music only, after all, the camera doesnt do nothing but take/record pics. Therefore, this new little hardware thingy might just be for music... i dont know, its all very confusing?

256 mb MS Pro Duo should be the storage media then at least.

Naturally if you are offering 3G mobile devices with enhanced music capability, the will be a significant jump in the memory capacity built into the device.
If it does not offer this facility, then the logical solution would be large capacity memory sticks or SD cards. Remeber that

signed an agreement with the SD Card group a few months back, so this deal will most likely come into play.
Just my predictions...use it don't use it!

@Hyperiablue. Good thinking Batman.
Looks like this is gonna be the way forward then. There will be a jump in memory capacity. What do normal network Walkmans use?

@hyper
You mention sd memory, so we're talking secure digital or some sort of bespoke hybrid thang ?
SD card prices are very competitive, I've just picked up a 512mb for less than £30.

That is correct @ marlonski. SD cards are cheaper so i think therefore the strategic deal. It will most likely use the MS PRO Duo's in the higher end devices since this is targeted @ the professional and high speed data market that require high speed memory. 2Gig Duo's are available already.
@goldenface:
As for the current generation of Walkman they currently use different media:
1) Either built in 256MB/512MB/1Gig memory
2) Hard drives: 20Gig or 40Gig
3) MD format: MiniDiscs.
