I had a Golg GTI 16v MK1 with a few bits and pieces and a lot of TLC there was no BMW catching up with the roaring 205bhp... I lost count of the horses after it had a full stainless steel exaust system made to measure, Port polish and I gave up when I couldt bolt a turbo on it....
I am terrible with mechanics....
Still running around, somewhere in the channel Isles...

See, thats whats wrong with society these days, we are brought up to believe that puntos, clios, and corsas are good quality, well designed vehicles. Buy a punto and i'll kill you

Yip the major diff is the new interior, its the same 1.6i engine as the previous models, 74kw, it has NO extras, no aircon,power steering, abs airbags, nothing, and 70s crash worthiness u rite, it still looks like a golf ... I think thats the intention
but its a CULT car thats why its so popular, there are golf 1s here that run m5's and e55's....
its mainly for the youngsters like me, easy to modify(cheap also) and looks damn fine on any 17' rim....
its the lifestyle that still sells this car!!! there competitors are corsas, puntos pugs and clios .... i dont have any evidence, but id say they more popular!!

Older technology and european build quality requires more maintenance than your average Japanese car, it's a simple fact.
I'm not knocking your taste in cars, just noting that Mini's, Triumph's and VeloCiti's fill a niche for enthusiast's...

Guess you'll have to start test driving then. You'll notice that Honda's have a great driving position, unlike the traditional Italian-Ape position of Fiat's, Alfa Romeo's, etc.

the cars built by VW in SA, parts are as cheap as bicycle parts
in terms of body work just as cheap...
ps the original rear light cluster cost around 20 pounds!!!!
a door handle is 20 cents!!!
the cars been in production for almost 30 years!! the second longest in the world!
parts are readily available...
74kw add another 300 pounds, and you got 96kw!!!
Im just a fan thats all, i got a 132kw golf 4 gti as well, but I use my mk1 on thursday nights for racing!
got two but I want them all!
