As somebody who's also can't choose between a SE or a TyTN I'm glad I found this forum.
Talking to TyTN owners and reading specific TyTn fora it's clear that, were SE have their big software problems, TyTn has a lot of hardware problems. Keyboard slides out to easily after a few weeks of use, the stylus falls out after some use, the keyboard doesn't register keypresses very well, the screenallignment drifts. GPRS\\UMTS and WiFi doesn't work very well together (is your WiFi fetching your mail or has the TyTn switched to GPRS?.....and how can I see it) A lot of users have to switch their internet profile in order to be able to use WiFi (very cumbersome) or switch to flightmode.
Right after the release of the TyTn people thought the problems were only in the first serie "627" but later posts indicate these problems are still there in later series.
I want a 990i or a TyTN but because of the major SE software problems (very good threads here) and the major TyTN hardware problems I won't buy any of these two....yet.

You're right about the wifi/3G connection priority thing, discovered that I was not using wifi at all. So had to stop the 3G to force my SPV to use wifi. But having said that it is very very quick over wifi and PIE is better IMHO than Opera for looking at a full normal web site.

This "3G - WiFi" issue is very important for a lot of business users who use both WiFi (in company) and 3G (on the road) Some told me they kept switching profiles in order to use both. The reason behind this problem seems to be the implemantation of push mail. GPRS\UMTS wants priority in order to receive mail. A lot of private users also have problems with this because of their expansive dataplans. It seems it's hard to tell (on the TyTN) which connection type is used. There are users who thought they used WiFi while downloading but actualy used expensive GPRS. They said they could see a WiFi connection was set up but after that download speeds were very slow....to find out (using a seperate GPRS monitor) they actualy used GPRS.

So, what I'm thinking at the minute: I'm learning more towards the Tytn, because I would really love to download various applications, particularly business ones, and it seems there aren't so many for the P990, because the unstable software on the P990 would do my head in (patience isn't a strong point of mine...) if it kept crashing and/or needing reboots to regain RAM and I'm not sure how easy the FO keyboard on the P990 would be to use to write emails compared to the slide out one of the Tytn.
However, I have to bear in mind that:
1) There have been lots of hardware issues with the Tytn, so it make take several to get a perfectly functioning one
2) The issue just highlighted on using GPRS rather than wi-fi and being unaware - I certainly couldn't afford unexpected high data bills!
3) I am a very frequent texter, and the lack of a 'normal' keypad might prove to be irritating (I text one handed without looking much of the time, so switching to two hand texting via the keyboard might not be great)
4) The Tytn just isn't 'sexy' compared to the SE, but I can't say that's a deciding factor at the moment!
So, next advice I need...
I currently have a K750i on a contract with orange. I think my monthly bill is £25, for which I've got 1000 texts and 150 minutes, but my bill usually ends up being £35 because of internet browsing / downloads, etc.
I would LOVE to switch to T-Mobile and get one of the £5 off Flext deals with W&W, but because of a couple of missed payments on a credit card (if it doesn't have a direct debit set up I'm terrible at just forgetting! It now does have a DD set up...) I have a credit rating of 'Low', so presume I wouldn't be able to switch to a new contract. (Anyone have any experience/advice to the contrary?)
So, if I stick with Orange, I will of course have to negotiate with retentions (like the last 2 years) to get anything like a decent deal. I would be prepared to pay up to maybe £75 for the handset, but need to figure out what deal I would settle for. I only use about 600 of my 1000 texts I think (will dig out old bills to check), so would sacrifice some of that, and 150 minutes is more than enough. However, I need to figure out what data usage I would need - Orange offer, for new customers, the following:
Orange World Access 4Mb: £4/m
Orange World Access 10Mb: £8/m
Orange World Access 25Mb: £16/m
What I need to figure out is how much I would need: I will probably surf the net via GPRS a little bit, but probably not that much (I don't spend much time in a place where I don't have broadband access - i.e. I drive don't use public transport, etc). I would like to download apps, but presume I can do this via my laptop and move them over? But what I would like to do is use my phone to pick up my email - currently btinternet, yahoo and hotmail accounts, that each go to Outlook.
If I was to set up to download emails, say, every hour when I'm out, and I have, for example, just 3 new messages each hour, how much data usage would this require?
I know this is a 'guesstimate', but I just need some pointers as to my predicted usage, so I can negotiate accordingly.
Thanks again all! Reading this thread has been invaluable. Though of course I'm still undecided, so maybe TOO helpful...

I actually don't think you will have a problem getting a new contract from TMobile, I know a lot of guys who have made the move from Orange to TMobile and not all have stellar CC rating!
If you're still trying to get a good deal on Orange (and there are some to be had) have a look here at what other people have got when getting the M3100.

You do need to speak to the 'proper' retention people and not go through the option menu as those people seems to get paid commission on how many people they get rid of!
If this is your first 3G phone on Orange then they will give you 3 months 3G trial. Aside from that there data packages suck when compared to TMobile. Orange were doing an £8/month unlimited data but this was primarily for people on Panther/Premiere packages it was a bitch to get hold of as most OCS had never heard of it, and AFAIK ended the 1st of September.
May be in 3 months time Orange have a comparable data package to TMobile but since they've started charging 1p for delivery reports on new tariffs I don't hold out much hope. With the TyTN/P990 you need a good data package unless you're Wifi-ing all the time.

2. Once you start to use 3G for web browsing the experience means you'll want to do more and therefore a cheap data package will be important
3. Missing a few payments does not affect your credit rating, if you have say 10 loan applications or credit cards in the last 12 months then that will affect your rating
4. Check T-mobile coverage in your area, seems to vary a lot. I'm lucky I have 3G most of the time

actually Windows Mobile 5 can display HTML emails, but it does a fairly poor job of it and in this respect, the P990/M600 definitly does a better job
its something I have always complained about in WM but I can only hope the next version does as a good a job as P990/M600

Well, I'm stunned - just spoke to 2 utterly pleasant people at Orange and got what I *think* are 2 potentially great deals with ZERO effort!!
I only called to find out when my contract ends, I didn't intend to negotiate, etc, just collecting the facts. It ends on the 19th, and they were literally biting my hand off to do a new contract deal, so I asked the current deal on the M3100, and she said it was £150 so she'd put me straight through to retentions - I didn't have to say a word!
Straight through to a thoroughly nice & helpful chap in retentions - I even said "Look, I'm not here to negotiate, I've not got all the facts & havne't done my shopping around yet, but what deal can you do on the M3100, based on the fact I want at least 600 texts, unlimited data usage & don't really need more than 150 minutes".
He said he'd give me the "absolute best deal Orange could possibly do for me", (like he'd say anything else, I know...), and said I had 2 options:
OPTION 1
- 18 month contract (I can live with that - believe I'd still get a phone out of them at 12 months)
- Free handset
- 550 X-network minutes
- Unlimited texts
- £35/month
or
OPTION 2
- Didn't mention length of contract, presume still 18 months
- £64.99 for the handset
- 150 X-network minutes
- 600 texts
- £25/month
To add unlimited data usage to both he would do for me at £7.50 - making them £42.50 and £32.50 respectively. I also have Orange Care, so I guess add £5 onto that.
So just have to anaylse the two against eachother and pick a favourite, then call back to negotiate an extra! - As I've just said on another forum, I'm a marketeer myself - so never accept a first offer!
(I made sure he made a note of both offers on the system for when I call back, as I know what they're like at backing out...) I should've asked for the deals on the P990 too, but forgot. Guessing they'd be similar if not the same.
What does everyone think?
