Just Finished upgrading my P990i...

Currently starting up, noticed that they added a progress bar below the "Sony Ericsson" during bootup. Still need to check this new firmware.

1. go to P990 support site

2. click Sony Ericsson Update Service

3. follow the instructions there on how to download, install and run seus

Yeah, I believe it when I see / have it! Right now SE cannot even produce a fw upgrade and NOT mess up basic features like the Low Alarm thing.

on windows VISTA its now possible to get extra RAM to speed up windows using a USB flash drive. (a great feature that really works well by the way) Wouldn't it be great if symbian/uiq could be ugraded to use part of the storage memory from a memory stick card for usable RAM! Impossible dream?

Now that P700 is "presented" and we saw some new stuff in UI.. is it possible that P990i is getting it too in next update(R6?) But RAM is still the big difference between those two.

hi ares and all,

I've found and verified the problem:
MP3s encoded using Variable Bit Rate (VBR) will not play.

However, I still don't understand why it showed up only after a few days.

Or maybe it just so happened that I didn't play those files since I upgraded to R5A17? I can't be sure.

I'm reluctant to reflash as I really don't have the time.

I understand R5A17 has WMA and WMV support? Probably something to do with that.

Maybe someone else can confirm this bug.

Cheers to all.

I have the same problem. Some of my mp3s just don't play. Before the firmware update there wasn't any problems with them. I use cdex to convert songs to mp3. I was trying to convert broken mp3s again but it didn't help. I always convert songs with constant bitrate. I have no time to convert songs with difrent settings again and again so I have converted broken mp3s to wma.
Another bug - wma tags don't work properly. P990 can see all tags but artists names are unknown. Can someone confirm this bug?

@michael the mage, its gonna happen, but you donīt provide an update from symbian 9.1 to 9.3 from one day to another...i imagine you would prefer the usual, i.e., having to buy another expensive phone to upgrade instead???

i agree it was retard from SE to change the alarm stuff, but even so, r5a17 is much better than the other fw, and i think the next r6 firmware, around June, should correct that problem

my point is, we will get an up to date phone more than a year after launch, on the sofware part...this is way better than any of us expected, and should make us happy enough until the true p990 sucessor is launched (its not the P700, it will come later)

intelegent, i think it can happen

i think sony is launching p700 to prolong the lifespan of the p990i and to give them time to develop the next P series. I look at it as a win-win situation for both sides. and all the updates we're getting. we should be glad, it could be worse. lets just hope that SE keeps up their duty to make the p990 still shine.
