Am I the only one who thinks that the concept of "Odin" looks pretty cool...???

Personally I don't like it. It actually looks a bit ugly to me.

Ask laffen to report that Sony Mobile was the 3rd biggest smartphone vendor in Q3, overtaking RIM. Google News will soon pick it up, then other sites will too.

I'm not sure if this is correct. IDG does not have the LG numbers in their list and LG sold 14.4 million units during Q3. I haven't found out how much of these devices are smartphones. The iPhone numbers are taken directly from the Apple financial report. Samsung and HTC does not report number of units sold any more, so the IDG numbers must be an estimated guess.

Hey laffen.
LG sold around 6.5-7 million smartphones. Also HTC figures are official as well. It's mentioned in their Q3 earnings report. 7.3 million smartphones shipped.

Great news about Sonys mobile business aside, let's get back to the tech side of things. What other technologies are people hoping to see in upcoming Sony phones? Personally I'd love to see an IR transmitter ala their tablets in either the 5" or 6" phones. I would also love it if they could put more of their Walkman tech into their flagship phone... give it the best of the best in audio tech.

In the third quarter, LG shipped a total of 14 million phones, a 9 percent increase over last year. As Reuters notes, more profitable smartphones made up half that number, coming in at a record 7 million. LG says it saw growth both in 3G smartphones like the L series and in 4G LTE phones like the Optimus LTE 2 or Optimus Tag.

Sony is officially no.3 now.... Let's all celebrate... It's party time... Can't wait to see mobile websites come up with this news & shock the mobile users...

Mr.Randomuser In this happy time would U mind answering my question that I've been asking U couple of times....???:)

wow...Sony with 8.8 vs 7.x for RIM, HTshit et al.

How the heck did Sony manage that number without any "huge" carrier deals ???
Any sales data on specific xperia models?

I registered on this site just to ask this question as there seem to be a lot of xperia and smartphone knowledgeable people here, but why aren't sony phones available on major US carriers? AT&T is only getting the TL and Play subsidized while Verizon subsidizes the play. Why aren't other phones, such as Xperia U, P, J, V available on those carriers? Furthermore how come Sprint, T-Mobile, Mobile PCS have no Sony phones?

I'm currently on the market for a phone and I would like to get the xperia TL, but I'm with Sprint and I have the ZERO plan with them where I get a great deal on my monthly bill on data, texts, and calls, needless to say I'm not leaving Sprint. The fact that I would have to get the device unlocked and pay a hefty amount makes the process unfeasible. Had I been able to subsidize my purchase with a 2 year extension contract I would have it in my hands Day 1.

It's a frustrating experience where S3 and HTCOne are screaming in my face at the Sprint store, the Sony phones are nowhere to be found. Is there any reason for this odd behavior? Why is Sony such a non player in the US and is there talks of that changing? Are they trying to get their phones on more carriers? I would hope they would especially since Sony's new CEO has lived in the US for a long time.

I apologize if this is OT.

Hope Sony would name their phones after Greek/Norse mythology gods and goddesses. Hope they retain Odin and Yuga as the official names It would be great!

More: Examples

Xperia Zeus / Thor (Future Flagships)

Xperia Ares/Poseidon / Loki (Rugged Phone / Water Resistant / Dust Resistant / Scratch Resistant )

Xperia Apollo (Music Centric)

Just my 2 cents

If Yuga is supposed to be the first global phone from Sony then does this mean that it will have an IR transmitter, as most Japanese phones have this feature.

I liked it.

About osmeone who said about IR Transmitters: I'd also love that (It would be a huge mess to set up with my Samsung TV (Except for tablets and phones, we like their products here, and they are less expensive than Sony ones)), but I don't think Sony will do that, sadly.

I hope thing would change next year in US after Softbank (Japanese carrier) going through acquire major stake at Sprint, and hope Sony see this opportunity to penetrate to US market with their stylish handset.
