The only thing blocking the development and implementation of CDMA is Quallcomm which developed the technology...GSM is cheaper because operators don't have to jump through a lot of hoops when trying to establish a network apart from the prevailing licensing conditions.
WCDMA is a variant of CDMA which suprisingly is not widespread in the US- they're only getting their first 3G GSM network this year.

@brix: You are right about that. Again, wireless telephone networks (and mobile phones in particular) were never a big hit in the US. I guess they had the whole country wired up before wireless became big fish

@Aya: I refer to ur analogy on the toyota automobile, clearly it refers to the efficiency of an engine at converting chemical energy to mechanical energy. surely this is not the case with mobile technology. I fail to see how cdma is cheaper to run than gsm.

@amby Exactly! AYA is talking theory.
What is "better" according to the books may not always work in reality. Can you prove that in Naija the call quality of CDMA is better?
Then remember my allusion to the poor financial situation of the CDMA networks. Those networks are still one-man-shows. The star of the lot, Starcomms has...what...200,000 subs? Come on.
Read my lips: Most of those Guys will sell out!
How many CDMA companies bidded for NITEL? That should give you an idea of the kind of networks that will flourish here.
"Cheaper to run": In Naija...CDMA is not cheaper to run...for the reason I already wrote.

In which case I must add that CDMA is a cheaper technology to run (with the consequent lower end costs to subscribers) than GSM
The only reason cdma seems to be cheaper in Nigeria, is because the PTO's who have deployed its use here are operating fixed wireless licences, hence their numbering style 01-774, 01-804, 09-570 etc.
Let me remind you that as soon as universal licencing is implemented, Multilinks numbering style for its nationwide mobile phones would probably be 0807.... or some other trunk prefix which means that calls to and from such cdma lines would be classified as trunk, and would subsequently be billed as such.
Also, although UMTS is designed using W-CDMA standard, W-CDMA has very little in common with CDMA which is widely in use here in Nigeria. You may want to confirm this from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W-CDMA.

I think there's a gap in the market for CDMA operators in regards to mobile data applications.
Last year MTN/Qualcomm/Ericsson/Transtel
held trials around Joburg to test the viability of CDMA2000 in South Africa.
From all the marketing speak it's seems that CDMA2000 is a better speedwise then say W-CDMA which we've had for well over a year down here.

@AYA What would you advise the Board of the CDMA companies in Naija as they prepare for Universal Licensing? "Hey Guys, we have nothing to worry about. We have a technological edge???????"
What will you tell them?
