Yes, the guy on the phone said to try and update. I was already running the latest firmware, but I updated again just to be sure. No luck.

Is there any new firmware? Mine is R3CA038. The only bug I know is the random reboot, not very often though, I just experienced it two or three times up to now.

Mine is R3CA038 too..
Works great.. No random reboot at all, after more than a month full use of the phone..

Hmmm. My firmware is version R3CA033. The update service says my firmware is the latest version, both over the network and via PC. I'm on O2 in the UK by the way.
Also, is there anyway to stop it defaulting to the walkman app when i close the phone? Very annoying.

I also have to keep unlocking the keys to start or stop the music when the phone's in my pocket. I previously had the W810 that had a dedicated play/pause button on the side, which worked well in the pocket.
If anyone's side LED does start working after a firmware upgrade, let me know and I'll have a go again.
These are just minor gripes, I still love the phone!

I have always used my phones as primary MP3 players.
And they showed themselves much better than most mp3 players I've seen. So it's worth owning one walkman phone.
Atm I have P1 with W960's walkman installed on it, so if it counts like I'm using walkman, the walkman app I find it very useful.
It has excellent options for playback management and many more.

Man, I've got exactly the same problem! There's just no 1-click way to stop the music player when the phone is locked (and it's always locked inside the pocket) !! I used to own a W800 too and I know how convenient that was.
But I love the phone too and I am very happy with the audio quality as well. All in all, w980 is a very enjoyable gadget!
