Preview: Tel.Me T919
Tel.Me is a small Austrian company characterised by pairing innovative design with rich technological content. During the last edition of CeBIT, Tel.Me showed off its potential by presenting an interesting hybrid terminal. Hybrids are a sector that promises great satisfaction from mobile telephone manufacturers. The Tel.Me T919 is still just a prototype that, if everything goes as planned, will come out on the market next October at a price of around 529 euros.
Its price is an advantage, given the wide catalogue of functions and features that this product boasts. The meeting of the world of PDAs with that of mobile telephones has manifested itself in numerous, sometimes curious forms. On this occasion the manufacturer opted for a removable keyboard, placed above the wide touchscreen display. The display of the T919 has a resolution of 256 x 128 pixels and a good 32,768 colours. The manufacturer has maximised the dimensions of the display, making the dimensions of the telephone 120 x 52 x 23 mm, even though the weight has been contained to 115 grams. The antenna is integrated, as seems to be happening more and more. There is a digital camera integrated in the device. With the camera you can take photographs and then send them as files. The software also includes an image viewer for images in JPG, BMP and GIF formats.
Even though the T919 could seem like a 3G telephone, it is “only” a modern GPRS class 10 dual band, capable of a data speed of 85,600 kpbs. The memory is 14 Mb of RAM, and can also be increased with a MMC card up to 128 Mb. The phone book is very large: up to 1000 contacts. Other than sending and receiving e-mail, you can use the EMS standard, but not that of the next generation, MMS. You can surf the Internet with a WAP microbrowser, in version 2.0, compatible with XHTML. There is also an MP3 reader.
The ring tones are polyphonic, also downloadable via EMS. To insert information you can also use the T9 dictionary or the handwriting recognition system on the touchscreen display, as seen above. Another interesting function is the e-wallet, for secure transactions. To connect to a PC, or other compatible devices, you can use the USB cable or IrDA port. The autonomy, even if it depends on the use of the device, is very good: 320 hours in standby and 3 hours in conversation.
“The introduction of the T919 for autumn 2002 does not only mean our entrance into a new market, but is also a sign of the internationality of the company,” declared Manfred Jahn, CEO of Tel.Me. These words should be taken seriously given that in a short time the manufacturer has made many inroads in the Austrian cellular and MP3 reader market. According to analysts, the smartphone market will be one of the most successful market segments in the mobile telephony sector and Tel.Me obviously wants to be part of the game.
