yes the first firmware upgrade is going to release an extra nearly 6mb of RAM on startup bringing this up to 24.75mb out of 50mb. So i do think they must be able to do something similar on UIQ3 well at least i would hope so.
I wouldn't touch agile messenger just yet as all versions seem to suck ram and cause crashes in all the new devices just now. I personally install as little as possible of 3rd party software as these are always the culprits that tend to cause freezes and crashes IMO. So far all i have installed is autolock and that works well and has caused no problems. I know we should be able to and that's the point of a smartphone but its just not possible for things to run smoothly IMO.

no, I think the only way
will improve on available usable memory is to remove functionality! things like wifi, um, calendar, um, well you get where I'm going with this

Has anyone played a game on the phone yet? Not one it came with but one you've brought, if so what's it like, I'm interested because the P990I and M600I have hardware 3D graphics accelerator chips in them.
Can you not set the P990I to automatically close programmes down when you exit them?

no. as with windows mobile devices, we'll be looking for 3rd party apps to do that if we really feel the need, but I never have since the O/S will close the apps when it needs the memory

understand your point about the RAM hungry UIQ3, and I agree with you that after a 6 month delay little has moved in this area. But I did notice that in the first verison of the P990 firmware Opera needed between 10 and 12mb of RAM to start and now it seems happy with around 6/7mb - so some optimisations are possible. My money is on improved memory management to reduce leaks and the caches that UIQ3 seems to use for speeding-up the UI, you can see this mechanism at work when fails such as showing FC menus in FO mode or flashes inappropriate screens occassionally. Given that I was happy with the M600 for a few weeks before the arrival of the P990 I think 19MB of RAM with less leaks would enable the P990 to be stable for most users. Now I have 16mb at start-up, lets see if SE can give us another 3mb.

Certainly the opera enhancement you mention is good but that doesn't change the initial available usable memory which is the important thing and anything done to the browser will make no difference to a person who does minimal browsing but wants to maximise their other applications.
I laughed out loud when I hard reset my latest (and greatest) TyTN before starting to install stuff and found 55.3 mb ready and waiting for me to use
mind you, I wonder these days of relatively cheap memory why we are scrimping and saving for the odd megabyte. yes I know its non volatile but I'd pay an extra 50 quid to double the memory in any of these devices
its fine to say that I have a 4gb card in my P990 and a 2gb card in my TyTN and I can simply install things there, but if I want to swap cards for music, video, applications etc then I have to sit down and think how best to arrange where I install what applications that I might want all the time and I'm really of the mindset that the device itself should already have more memory than I should need do I don't have to worry about

Currently have a 1gb card that has 2 full length movies, videos and pictures and still have over 400mb left so that is enough space for me for now and only cost £20 i may get a 2gb card if i start shooting loads of video but even that is under £40.
Whoever claimed that the M600 and P900 has 3D graphics chip i think you will find it doesn't, what is says is
"Three-dimensional looking game graphics for a deeper and better gaming experience."
which is hardly the same thing at all I'm afraid to say.

If you click on the M600 on the left for it's information you will see it say's the same thing.
It's also stated in this review under games:

And the W900I has got full 3D graphics acceleration in it. Beat the N93 to it I'm afraid.
