catching up with japanese phones, we've been talking about that for years, that's not gonna happen unlessEuropeans suddenly decide to be less price elastic, and to adopt new technologies quicker

I thought was because companies like Fujitsu, who make the chipsets, didn't want to fall behind in the Japanese market by devoting their resources to ramping up capacity to satisfy a global demand.
Thats what I read anyway.

yes, and why would they forgo this biz opportunity?
obviously it's unattractive
why is it unattractive?
cuz people are not willing to pay for what they're best at doing: high end fashion phones that complements the network service (seriously, a lot of the features require the network to make changes, timed-schedule-auto-recording of DMB TV programs according to the e-timetable, banking/credit card service, music subscription service etc)
at least not enough people are willing to pay, so they won't open customer service centers just for that 1/100000 person

It's fascinating how different the Japanese market is to the European market.
But if you think we have it bad, take a look at the Americas. No offense, but their benchmark of high-end is the Blackberry
But anyway, a side note from a mysterious source, says that video recording resolution of the T650 has not been confirmed. These non-smartphones are surprisingly powerful and can easily do QVGA @ 30fps, not to mention VGA...

People not willing to pay - that's why Sharp stopped exporting their 9xSH series(well, that and the Voda KK buyout by Softbank)....
....interestingly, the Japanese manufacturers also provide different models for different networks(unlike ROW, where all nets get the same basic handset(with tailored firmware)).....they don't seem to produce generic models??
Shame really, that those who ARE prepared to pay, cannot import handsets that are world useable(or modify them to be) anymore(last ones were V802SE - Z800i, 903SH - Sharp903), like automotive enthusiasts have been forced to with cars for the last
20 years(AW11(MR2)SC, BNR32(SkylineGTR), JZA70(originalSupraTT) etc, all JDM models)...

I think u got it the other way round. If it is true then N82 is throne holder. Sofia will be a challenger. Well, as far as we know Sofia dont have WIFI, GPS and VGA 30fps video recording. That's a real handicap for the challenger Sofia.
Yeah, true.
