Thanks for your replys.

I think the best update to go for is

imate English 1.20.305.3 07/21/06 1.20.305.104 1.07.03.10 32.41.7010.02H.

However, if i update to this firmware, how do i get my vodafone settings back, ie Vodafone Theme, MMS, GPRS Setting back with the imate firmware.

with the i-mate firmware, when the phone first starts after an upgrade, you get a prompt to pick the carrier you use and this should set your settings.

I haven't tried the i-mate rom on my TyTN yet but it always worked that way on my k-jam and Jam and looking into the extended ROM details I see alot of carrier details are there just as it was previously

I have tried both I-mate and Dopod and so far the Dopod is the safest and most stable. I would recommend giving it a try and entering the settings manually are as easy as pie.

Having had my P900 updated before i saw it as a right royal pain to do, you lost everything!! On the TyTN everything i can backup dead easily now....but you gotta understand my aprehention to doing it for the 1st time....cost me alot and i dont wanna go playing with things i dont understand....if one of you guys (or gals) could gimme a PM and explain the process it would be great.

Couple of questions right now i have:
1) If i do go for one of these ROMs (the imate or dopod one) will the phone look and work differently...ie will my phone work EXACTLY the same just have improved versions of everything??

2) the 3G app and MMS etc... say they are 3rd party done by HTC so will i lose the ability to use 3G and mms or will this be solved easily?? (also for some reason ireally like the green HTC theme thats on it will i be able to use that again??)

forgive my total lack of guts about this but if i dont ask how can i learn about it!?

Mr Vanx - I'm really glad you've asked the questions, as my Tytn (M3100 with Orange) arrives tomorrow morning, and I want to do all I can to ensure it's working optimally, but at the same time I know nothing about how it works, the WM5 system and updating firmware for a phone/pda either, so I was about to ask similar questions myself.

After it arrives, I'll have a play with it, to ensure the keyboard and sreen are all ok, but then what should I do first - check for updated firmware? And if so, how? And is there anything I should particularly avoid, with me being a beginner, etc.

I really want to learn about this, I'm pretty good with computers, and would like to at least get to the point where I am comfortable tweaking my Tytn to work better/faster, etc, and to keep it updated, and to install and use additional applications.

And on that note, another question - what applications are particularly recommended? Particularly for viewing photos/video, business tools such as organisers or home screen 'plug-ins' to help me manage my time better, etc etc.

I really, really appreciate anyone's help!

Man this is all confusing and headache.

Correct me if i am wrong.

The updated Dopod does not come with a extended rom which means i need to download the Vodafone 1650 VPA Compact III (UK) Extended Rom (...but i have the v1605 :-S) as i want the phone to be like as i got it but how exactly do i install the Extended Rom after the update is completed.

What happens and what do i have to do after the update is completed?

Someone wrote "Once the update was complete, I didn't let the extended rom run and then unlocked the extended rom. I then coppied it to my card and copied the vodafone extended rom to the device and hard reset again"

In english for begginers would be nice.
