It's better this way. No matter what, the glass would get dirty even with the lens protector in front of the glass. This way makes it impossible to get grease in between the glass and lens protector. It's actually some pretty good thinking. And please.. if it wasn't going to work, then they wouldn't have done it. It's not like they let a kid and his friend do the drawings / plans and tests.

You didnt think this thru. The whole purpose of the lens protector is to reduce the lens from getting dirty. Now the lens get dirty easily which defeats the purpose of the lens cover in the first place.

I think I did... Wait and see.

No, you didn't... No matter how big fan of SE I am, this glass cover is a pure bullshit...

Too bad that SE K850i won't have Bluetooth 2.1, only 2.0. But I think I'll buy it if the price is ok

he he, of course you right. Sonyericssons top-engineers who have been testing/working with the lens-cover and the protection-glass (for many months), have completley failed.
im convinced that you have tried the glass and everything, and found out that the pic-quality (or whatever) became really bad.............or im a wrong ?

i think the glass is there for a good reason, and will not deteriorate the pic quality, (with fingerprints or not).

I'm sorry but I have to barge in and disagree here.

I am sure finger prints, dusts or scratches will cause quality issue no matter what if it is on the glass. That is a rule of thumb. Something blocking an optic will 100% cause a drop in quality, but for some reason, SE decided that that is something they are willing to have happen in order for another more practical issue they have at had.

Most likely it's more of a benefit outweighs the cons where the differences in quality is not that bad as compared to a more important issue with maybe protection or something, that you can just easily wipe the glass clean to improve image quality, but you can't wipe away a damaged lens/optical system.

yup... coz an SLR does not have any glass cover except fot the lens itself.. wait ANY camera doesnt have a cover only its lens.. they only have shutter covers.

But you must remember, there is one big difference in the case of the K850i.

The K850i is only 18mm thick, including the LCD at the back (or front, depending which direction you look at it... damn dual fronts.. lol) when compared to other cameras which have more space to work with.

So in this sense, there is no precedent to compared it to, or a benchmark if you might say.

So maybe the requirement by SE to keep it 18mm thick and have a cover mechanism has lead the engineers to develop this solution?
