@mikky: Nope. As a matter of fact, there are verrrryyyy, verrrryyy few SE phones that support EDGE. In addition, those few that do are not the verrrrryyy common models.

If you want EDGE functionality in a phone, you won't go wrong looking at Nokia.

@deji: Just being curious. What necessitated your migration from Glo to Vee?

And still on the EDGE subject, a few years ago while many analysts were of the opinion that EDGE had no future and would fizzle out, I stuck to my guns and insisted that it would gain widespread use.

The anti-EDGE camp was populated by those who believed that since most European networks paid through their noses for 3G licences, they would concentrate on exploiting 3G to the max.

Unfortunately, it didn't quite work out. Today, those same EU networks are rolling out EDGE service quite extensively. Many more carriers in Africa and Asia have also "gone over the EDGE" (forgive the pun ) .

My argument was - and still is - that it costs very little to implement EDGE on an existing GPRS network (its basically the same technology), while it is fairly expensive to set up 3G, especially because its a different technology from GSM/GPRS.

The trend continues as we see here in Nigeria Mtel now EDGE-ready inspite of making noise about 3G last year. I expect they will eventually put 3G in place, but I suspect that like most GSM networks that have implemented 3G, 3G will be limited to major cities and EDGE implemented on the rest of the map.

@Dejitella: DomainStandard.net? Absolutely. Works on WAP like a charm, just as on Web. Plus plenty of useful info for mobile users there as well.

For some weeks now, I have not been able to access Esato XHTML/WAP on my wife's Vmobile/Nokia 7250 combination. Other sites, including mine, load. But when I try Esato, it returns a "No gateway reply" error.

@deji: mobile yahoo is strictly limited to phones on US carriers. However, if your phone is java (J2ME) compatible, you can find a java midlet for yahoo instant messaging. Again, there are one or two WAP sites with the functionality.

What phone do you use?

PM me your email and I'll send you a gmail invite.
