i think you should update...the improvements are well over the few problems IMO
Well the reported bug with the Alarm is enough for me not to update. I use it every morning to wake me up. If that doesn't work then I'm forced to stick with the older FW.

Guy H, I think you should definitely update.
After the last update since the 10th 0f April most of the problems I had ( and I had a lot) are gone. Not even one crash during incoming calls or restarts for any reason. I can have video calls now though sometimes with problems with my camera( the small picture which shows me keeps rotating).
WiFi signal is stronger even though I never had problems with it. Actually WiFi was the one thing which always worked perfect.
I have some problems with the MMS but I am not sure it is the phone and not the provider or the SIM card.
It seems that all these theories about formatting the disk and not restoring old back ups are not always correct. This time I restored a previous back up and I don't have any of the previous problems. It was the messed up firmware, which created all kinds of problems not only for me but for a lot of other people I know.
I agree with rossyrox the time I have spent had to spend re-configuring, flashing and reading forums about the P990i is unbelievable.
My phone is rock solid stable. No restarts in 7 days of uptime. Wifi works fine. As I say if I was having problems I would certainly update but the quiet alarm bug is big enough for me not to want to update.

Guy H, no one is saying the alarm does not work...i use it every morning to wake up!!! The problem is you can only use short sounds, mp3 songs are not an option. But it will work no problem.
My phone with R4B03 was also rock stable, and i did not get any reboots for months. However, you canīt beat R5A17 superior speed (menus), opera finally stable, opera mini and other java apps starting in much less time, and generaly seeing apps taking less RAM
But hey, if you want to stay untill June (at least) with your phone running under its potential, is up to you
@michael the mage, still, i see no one reporting the same problem you have, so we canīt say its a bug. I wonder why you get that...

@Ares
Thanks for your info about alarm volume.
Can you confirm that the video autofocus trick (from camera mode to video) does not work anymore on R5?

ares I want ot update have no doubt and if you assure me I can have a usable alarm (I'm not bothered about the sound) then of course I will. It's just the reports I've read of people not waking up put me off. The rest of the FW sounds a nice improvement but this was one area I needed confirmation is still usable.
Thanks for the reply.

As for the restore, the third party apps never restore, only the advanced device lock restores BUT needs always new activation.
That is not entirely correct, some applications do get restored.

Hi Folks,
I need your help, I am not very familiar with the upgrading of the firmware. I am using the R4A13 and I would like to upgrade to the R5A17. I dont really know how, coz when I read the info from:
http://uiq3.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/CDA/P990i, it stated that he R5A17 version is from World, Italy/Swiss and France. I wonder how could I select World? If I select Italy/Swiss or France, would I get English on my fireware? When I selected English (from UK), it told me my firmware is already up-to-date.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Come on, you are not being fair

How can ares give you any assurances when even SE is unable to do that?
Personally, any problems I had with the previous version have been eliminated with this latest fw, that is all I can say. I have no serious issues left with the P990, just need improvements in a number of areas which we all know.

Guy H, problem is, most people, like me, used mp3 songs has alarms...and in the first day after update most of us were late to work lol
Just do it, if you use small sounds, like the predefined sound, there is no problem at all, it rings loud

jungleboy, selecting language of the update program has no effect on fw update. What is your CDA #? (CDA ...../x) the "x" is the important factor for upgrading. World Generic 1 has /1, if you have something like /68, then you may have to wait for some time before the fw for your version is made available from SE.
