Sony had originaly inteded to sell more and more xperia in order to catch up Apple and Samsung.
However, Chinese companies have grown, and prices of smartphones are getting lower than Sony's forcast, especially in low end market.
So, Sony, who knows its own defeat in price wars in TV set business, decided to set a higher value on profit rather than amount.
Large loss in this financial year is due to this shift in strategy, and most of it is a temporary cost to redeem a bedt owed to buy the business from Ericsson.
Therefore, loss will be largely reduced in the next financial year, or a small profit may be made.

the additional lost of 1.4 billions for the upcoming financial report was due to the sales of the VIAO division. It was sold at a lost, basically a write off. It is money that they spent or the estimated value and will never get back rather than loosing actual money. This is how Sony were loosing billions of dollars for the last decade and still be around, as far as I know, correct me if I am wrong.

probably poor management, the company has been restructuring for the last decades, and still loose money, sigh.

Sony's huge lost in its mobile division is mainly due to impairment or goodwill charges, a good accounting practise, due to the overestimation of the division's value.
Iirc, Sony mobile was making profits (though small ones) before the impartment charge.

Everyone seems to ask for so many new stuff in the Xperia Z4.
I only ask for it to not trail behind processor-wise.
Full HD works more than well for me, so does 3GB RAM, 32GB internal with memory slot, camera that takes just slightly better picture than it does today. I would want an improve HDR mode. That mode sucks royally.
In contrary to what some people are saying about night shot quality. I think it takes far better than my Note 3.

I should know because I own these two phones.

Sony slipped from being the 6th biggest smartphone maker in 2013 to 10th overall this year

more like others moved up than Sony's slip. xiaomi is a beast backed by Qualcomm and Google

LG has been backed by Google Nexus yet it slipped as well.

HTC is not even on the list but they are still able to make profit even with little marketshare. Why can't Sony do the same?

sony isn't sliding, but it isn't growing either. others grew over sony

htc had to sold a bunch of things and restructure. we'll see if HTC will survive in the next 3 years

Sony can still fix their sales.
The brand recognition is still very strong. I would say it is top 3 and yes even stronger than LG.
They just need to be more visible in the states. LG probably spend twice if not even three times as much as Sony does on marketing.
Marketing does not seem to be their forte nowadays.

they are getting better, Z3 is available for all carrier in Canada, thats a huge difference compare to Z2 and Z1. Their brand recognition is strong but most of the time the sales man just recommand samsung whenever peopel ask for new phones. That is probably the biggest problem.
