Isn't it time to ditch the x64? I've tried it and it sux. Anyway, use vmware server, a free software making a virtual computer on your computer. Install a x86 xp on it, map the usb port to the virtual computer and flash. Not sure I would dare, but there is a chance it will work.

You really have to push quite hard!!

don't worry, the battery cover is quite flexible and shouldn't break so easily. Just push down firmly on the top of the battery cover near the camera lens!

There is definitely a knack to getting of the battery cover. First time I found it almost impossible now I can do it very quickly.
You need a fair amount of force, but the reason it is so stiff is simply because of that little rubber sticker SE has put there (due to the thinner BST-33) causing friction against the battery. The problem is in trying to push the battery cover off you invariably end up pushing down on it in the middle too therefore making that rubber sticker stick harder to the battery.

What I tend to do is to just move the battery cover down far enough so that I can get a fingernail or similar (maybe the edge of a credit card would work too) between the top of the battery cover and the phone casing on one side. You can then really easily just push it off from there - it literally just pops off from that point as very little force is needed.

I think the reason why it is so stiff is simply because of that little rubber sticker SE has put there (due to the thinner BST-33) causing friction against the battery.
