Does anyone know if this is true, or legal and more importantly is there a way to surf for free in a wi-fi hotspot.

Yes and no. If its a commercial hotspot you usually need to subscribe, eg T-mobile or The Cloud or BT Openzone. My favourite local cafe (near where I live in the UK) has free wifi - but you need to find these free hotspots.

Getting my long awaited 990i tomorrow from Vodafone online, BUT, I was shocked to hear from a Voda sales person that even if i'm using my home wi-fi internet connection, I will be charged by Vodafone for the data downloaded, because you cannot use wi-fi without GPRS being on and charging while surfing.

I heard that initial voda sourced 990i's will be unbranded and unlocked thus avoiding this kind of rip off but it looks like I was wrong.

thanks for your replies, I hope your all correct.
One of the main reasons i'm getting this phone is because I'de like to surf for free when at my house or a freinds house or at work or wherever there is free wi-fi and I dont have a laptop handy.

@SL33PYH34D

In Camberley, the Bonny's Cafe near the Sony Centre (also close to Argos) seems to have a very strong Belkin router nearby. The P990 works well with it, but my old Nokia 9500 always struggled.

Hi Peter

try www.mymemory.co.uk

SanDisk 2GB Memory Stick PRO DUO

ONLY £49.99

SanDisk 4GB Memory Stick PRO DUO

ONLY £74.99

These are a bit more pricey than some but they are genuine

In theory no difference at all (apart from the obvious one of a EU plug on the charger for privately imported EU models), but the key differentiator is probably the CDA string which may or may not limit availability of firmware updates.

Mine (and AFAIK all of us who got them early from Expansys) has a CDA of 162007/1 which equates to a generic world phone.
I know however that some phones which appear to have been purchased in Belgium must have a different CDA as they have not had access to the latest updates.

In general though, I have never had any issues with getting SEUS updates for SE phones bought from Expansys.
