Because they use the #DemandGreat hashtag to promote the Z3 series.
If the Z3 is taken up by AT&T, that would be pretty big news for them, trying to breaking into the US.

I'm also that tech guy.

i understand what you write here. z1c is definitely a capable device for this year but sony ignored the phablet world for too long so that may be the reason for less then a year announcement of the new compact now and not next year because that may be their new strategy: main, compact, tablet compact - ifa. main, ultra, tablet - mwc. speculations but it makes sense.
@goldenface
refreshed z3 with curved sensor for
usa variant after world announcement of z3
a month ago... what are you smoking my friend?

i like surprises too but let's not loose our heads.

usa consumers should just be happy sony release z3 devices in timely manner if that is the case. plus, nothing in sony's invitation indicates a new sensor. it would be nice if they bundle z3 with free accessories to make it a really good deal especially after they almost ignored the usa market.

It's just the US launch, most likely.

Never.
Sony would never make a device they launched a few weeks ago, obsolete just for the US market. It would be bloody stupid from a marketing point of view.

Agreed. Tablets, compacts and phablets once a year. Flagships twice a year. Latter could have been once a year too. Different variant in US --> Stupidity at its finest. Sony needs a good marketing that does not pick on apple or such. Just cool marketing.

no, they did not ignore the phablet market. it's just that their attempt with the z ultra was pathetic. it had no notable feature other than its large display and thin body. it's supposed to accept any material as stylus but it's not that useful.
they could have made the ultra better if they did what the rumors were saying back then: a pressure sensitive touch display using the IR tech they had on their e-book reader, a manageable size (should have stayed at 5.5-5.7, with minimal bezels), and LED flash.
they could've also innovated by including a small keyboard cover/stand (now gimmicky covers have become quite popular and they could have started that with the z ultra). they should have targeted business people/executives and not women who want large, thin, and stylish phones.

@miromiromi
They could have made z ultra better no doubt, but that is not a reason for not announcing a phablet for almost a year and a half since its announcement. criticism should have given them a good ground to improve the line just like they are doing with z line and z compact. they could announce a new ultra at ifa or before that but they didn't = that means they are ignoring rivals (and delaying the next ultra for next year if the rumor is true).
i think the reason for that is that they believe the compact will sell more then a new ultra for 2014 as it builds on z1c that got good reviews from the start so they favor it over ultra and delay ultra for mwc. also, the compact has weaker rivals or none and they want to announce high end devices only at ifa and mwc so by that they get the most exposure especially from the mobile media.

^ or maybe they're still hurting over the unsold ultras. i remember it was announced before that they were releasing ultras with no phone functions. maybe they're still trying to sell those. but at least they are now offering the compact tablet.
yes, they should be producing phablets instead of offering ugly and low-spec'd low end (expect xperia e1) and mid-range phones.

For Sony’s new Xperia Z3 flagship, Carphone Warehouse sent a bloke to the bottom of a swimming pool to do an
underwater unboxing.
