hi im looking at computers on ebay and noticed theres a difference in price if it has a AMD Athlon processor to if it has a pentium 4 processor, is there much difference between them and would it be noticeable?
Im looking at these 2 sysytems:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ATHLON-[....]tegoryZ179QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PENT-IV[....]tegoryZ179QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
the graphics card is also better in the athlon system, which sysytem would be best for high end games like call of duty 2 and would they both play it easily? thanks guys

I'm not going to get into the old AMD vs Intel war here, I really have no preference for either chips and the majority of users will notice no difference in performance between the two.
The reason I say this is because AMDs and Intels use completely different architectures to achieve the same goal and it's only when you start benchmarking that the minor differences start to show up. People will argue with me over this point, feel free, I won't be taking part in the debate!
The general consensus is that AMD systems are better for gaming whilst Intels are better for applications that require repetitive mathemetical calculations such as video editing and high quality graphics rendering (CGI stuff like animated films, not gaming).
Whether you choose Intel of AMD, the important things to remeber are:
- Don't go for the fastest processor you can afford at the expense of Memory and a graphics card. When it comes to gaming, it's worth getting a reasonable processor and a slightly better graphics card than the other way round. Memory is everything, you need at least 512Mb in a gaming rig, 1Gb or more is ideal.
- Don't think that a graphics card with highest amount of memory is the best. Most modern games are designed to utilise 128Mb of GPU memory as default, extra memory only allows you to whack the quality settings up a little, it doesn't really improve framerates. It's the GPU core speed and memory access speeds that make the difference.
- If possible, buy a seperate sound card too. Just like on board graphics, on board sound is inefficient and uses a surprising amount of your PC's resources. It doesn't have to be a fancy one, even a cheap card will help boost performance.
- The processor's L2 cache is VITALY important. A processor running at 2.2 GHz with a 1Mb cache will run faster than a 2.2GHz processor with a 512Mb cache, regardless of whether it's AMD or Intel.

my amd sempron 3000 is going strong. i personally prefer amd but as cyco said they are both as good and the differences only occur when you do more ocmplicated things on the pc. ive just always had an amd and have never had any big problems
