Sadly, Sony phones have the most compromises of all the big names. Usually, purposefully which is by far the strangest way of making products imo.
Anyone who buys a phone primarily for its camera wouldn't be bothered at all by a camera hump. The hump is there to serve a purpose. With the Z1, Sony are just pretending the phone is capable when really the camera is a bit like the HTC One's - nothing special at all. Its camera is no better than anything that's come before.

Z1 is better than G2, S4 and other IMO, maybe not as good as the 1020 or N8 but the best android camera to date.

@etaab - unlike Nokia, Sony still has a compact camera business. If they put everything their compact camera can do into their flagship phone, their compact camera business would be cannibalized almost instantly. I, personally, think that's the biggest reason.
Second reason, is target market. Sony is in the business of making cell phones to compete against the likes of Apple and Samsung. They are not out to make the greatest cameraphone because quite frankly, that market is niche. To do what they have done in the Z1 and engineered that camera in such a thin body is impressive. It can and does outperform any other android flagship in many, many areas including camera.
And I disagree with your statement about not caring about the hump. I want a great camera but I wouldn't want it to have a hump. Perhaps 5 years ago, but not today.
Anyway.. 1020/808 .. they are in a different class as far as camera phones go. Much larger sensor and much more camera centric features. It is clear that they should and do outperform the Z1. But, the Z1 can and does produce photos that come close to the 1020 in certain situations, and that is impressive. Who knows, with some more software tweaks, it might even get closer to the 1020. I wish I knew someone around who has a 1020 so I could challenge them to a shootout.. but i guess that's the problem.. no one has a 1020.

You know what I find hilarious? GSMArena is now being labelled as biased due to the Lumia 1020 review vs the Z1 review, now that the Z1 results haven't come in favor of those who like Sony, GSMArena went from being credible to being biased overnight, it's never Sony's fault as they simply can't do no wrong, unbelievable.
It seems Nokia has done an outstanding job with the Lumia 1020, it's no 808PV, but it's definitely the best Camera smartphone readily available globally, got to give Nokia credit where it's due.

@ moogoo - Sony's compact camera market would not be cannibalised. They just don't have the technology Nokia do when it comes to cameraphones. Otherwise, they wouldn't feel the need to release these silly clip on lenses to improve the phones camera further.
I do agree though that Sony are too busy going for the target market, fashion over functions, but its slowly becoming a dying market. I know less and less people with iPhones now than I did two years ago. Those people haven't died, moved planet or anything bizarre, they're bought Android phones due to stupid Apple restrictions.
And how can you disagree with my statement regarding camera humps ? if someone buys a phone for its camera knowing it has the hump which therefore gives it such a good camera and is happy to go ahead with the sale - then clearly they don't mind the hump. If they did they wouldn't buy it surely ?? I don't mind a hump at all if it means I get the best camera in the business.
By the way this isn't a thread for Sony bashing, this is all about the cameras for me, but when you say nobody has a 1020, well, nobody has a Z1, Z or Xperia T or S either. I don't know anyone with a Sony phone at the moment. I don't see anyone with one in the street, in bars, shopping malls etc. I expect the 1020 will sell much better than any other WP phone before it due to its camera alone and probably dwarf the sales of the Z1, HTC One and other wannabe flagships.

@etaab - well we can agree that neither of us really know what the hell sony is thinking
as far as the hump - i only meant that even today, someone looking for a phone wants great camera capability in a slim and sleek device. i think fewer and fewer are willing to accept a hump and only those who value the camera feature above all others in a smartphone, would accept the hump as it's simply necessary with today's tech for what you get.
and i didn't take your comment or anyone else's in this thread as bashing sony. you're all entitled to your opinion. moreover, facts are facts. 1020 has a bigger sensor, probably better optics, and a proven algorithm, not to mention a xenon flash. it should and does outperform the Z1. When i said no one has a 1020, i didn't mean it as a bash. i sincerely wish i knew someone who had one so i could have a shootout. it's true what you say, not many people have sony devices either, especially here in the states. 9 out of 10 people would look at my phone and have no idea what it is.
1020, i think will sell better than previous lumias, but the fact is, it's handicapped by WM. with not a whole lot of app support, that is the biggest compromise a power user can make by getting a 1020. Hopefully, now that Microsoft has acquired nokia's hardware dept, they will put much more effort into getting more app/developer support. Truth be told, i just want iOS to die! haha..
