The airport code is SXM. Just like FRA for Frankfurt/Germany. That is where the SXM comes from. Sometimes it is used instead of St. Maarten. See

@Resident, you're right, sometimes city names get mixed with city or airport codes, specially in the turism industry where everyone talks in codes and nick names. For example sometimes I say to a friend or relative that I´m flying to "Ghuarulos or GRU" whem I´m going to Sao Paulo, or "Ezeiza or EZE" when going to Buenos Aires.
