Dunno if anyone posted this before but i see an s700 at the bottom of
this page for 449 quid sim free,also there is a z1010 for 549 quid sim free and a k700 at 319 quid.

Ive been reading other forums and it always comes up that someone is complaining that the S700 is long when the swivel is open or that it is a swivel. There are also some posts in this thread about the same complaint. So I thought of putting together my guesses as to why the S700 has the form factor it does aside from the Japanese connection.
I believe that SEs concept of the S700 is a multimedia phone with a digital camera look and feel. Being a multimedia phone, it needed a huge screen. However, the huge screen would push down the keypad in a candybar phone resulting in a longer phone than the S700. A long phone with the keypad showing does conform well with the digital camera look and feel concept. They had to hide the keypad.
So at this point, I was thinking that a clamshell hides the keypad but in order to achieve the camera look it would have to have a pretty good subdisplay. But since this is a multimedia phone, the huge screen inside would already cost a lot and the added cost of a good subdisplay would make the cost of the phone prohibitively high which would alienate the market they were trying to reach. So they compromised by using the swivel form factor. Just one huge screen hidden keypad and overall digital camera look and feel.
Is that a good yarn? What do you guys think?

u have ur point there, but i think they can also consider the slider form factor. i think the slider form would comply to most ppl's complaint about not being able to operate the 'huge' thing with one hand.
personelly, i think the swivel form is stylish and elegent, but the slider form is more practical and simple. them again, i think they (SE engineers) have to compromise with the camera lense placement, since the attachment point of the swivel form is where the lense is. that may be the deciding factor, i guess...

But the slider form factor has its weakness: (as in the 7650) when it gets worn out, it tends to slide down on its own when you have it open. A real hassle when your typing text. 7650 also has bad balance when open. I have many friends who've dropped it when opening it.

I thought it was a cool idea to have a some kind of a slider (I had an 8890) and over time, that connection with that slider would get loose, and I eventually had to talk to people with the slider closed (to maintain connection of the mic). Hopefully the S700 is not gonna be plagued with such a problem, and SE probably forsaw it so that's why they incorporated a swivel design. I'm just hoping that the swivel has that reassuring "click" that the Z600 has.
