Sheesh, what an insanely long thread. Any danger of UK people getting their own regional forum?
Actually if anyone can recommend a UK forum, I'd appreciate it.
Really looking for some UK-related advice. Currently on Orange contract, but due to gradually getting pissed-off with them I want to move myself and my wifie onto another network, preferably pay-as-you-go now, but I must have GPRS access.
So if anyone can recommend, I'd be grateful, thanks.

Yes, there is something you can do,after a year on Orange you can keep your Orange number by converting that account to OVP Virgin deal (nothig ever to pay ever again but free answer phone,so you can send voice recordings of any length to each other for free you also recieve for free provided your both on the OVP deal). Right now you have no monthly expenditure you can buy a tasty phone on o2 or Voda and use your OVP Orange sim in it as most o2 & Voda contract phones are not locked.also remember a little known fact is o2 contracts at o2 shops & phones for you are a stitch because they have minimum call charges and limited use of free minutes EVEN though they maybe called the same as a tarrif in Carphone Warhouse, because they use differant calltime providers , so best stick to Carphone Warhouse. anyway its handy to have a choice of signals for those trips to cornwall or scotland, it can get pachy........pachy.

eamonn - don't think virgin do GPRS. could be wrong though, in fact, as far as i'm aware, no UK network does it.
pachy - it may be free to recieve voicemail, but it certainly ain't free to make the call in the first place.
yoni - welcome to the insanely long UK thread. we are actually quite proud of our length. it's not the quality that counts
