Thanks, nice pictures. Bigger X1 screen is obvious, although not wider at all. I hope 65 colours doesn't affect the overall experience.

Hi Koto,
Hi resolution at 65000 colors beats low resolution at millions of colors. Hands down any day of the week.

I don't have the X1 YET but I proved it to somebody in another forum against the iPhone. with the following example:

Let's do the math.

Xperia 65000 color = About 10000 shades of blue
iPhone 16 million colors = About 3 million shades of blue

Xperia screen size 2.57" x 1.54"
iPhone screen size 2.90" x 1.96"

Xperia screen resolution 800 x 480
iPhone screen resolution 480 x 320

Xperia in 2.57" displays 800 shades of blue
iPhone in 2.90" will displays only 480 shades of blue

NOW THE MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION:

Assuming both go from the same dark blue (B1)to the same light blue,(B8)
which one has the smoothest shade?

A- the one with 800 shades in a compact 2.57"
B- the one with just 480 shades in more spread 2.90" lenght

*******************************************
In case you are the rare exception who gets the wrong answer
look at this simplified example:

B1 is dark blue and B8 is light blue

Xperia
B1 B2 B3 B4 B5 B6 B7 B8
B1......B3......B5......B7......B8
iPhone

Did you notice that in the iPhpne colors b2, b4,b6 are missing because it doesn't have the resolution to display them?

NOW THE 2 DOLLAR QUESTION:
which one is more likely to have color bands showing?

If you answer this one wrong again you are a hopeless... iphone fanboy

@WhyBe
I don't have the X1 YET, but I'm sure you can see the difference. In the example above iPhones has 320 blue shades less. That must be noticible. That will be the first test I'll make. You can see the diference between X1 and Pro in the Asia.Znet comparison (see the link in my yesterday post)

Hey man; I'm in Dunwoody GA. You?
Wish there were some mobile phone shops in this city, I feel so left out that I can't go check out so many of these phones in person that everyone else always gets 'hands-on' with so casually
I'd been scanning ebay every day since X1 dropped in Sweden...nothing good to note. Here's to hoping Clove comes through! I will certainly let everyone know my luck.

I live in Buckhead.. moved here after spending 3-odd years living just off Ashford Dunwoody Rd.
There might be a dearth of mobile phone shops around here but there are quite a few WinMo, and Nokia fans.. a bunch of us are on Craigslist 24*7 scanning for high end phones. There's a guy in Roswell who is a big fan of WinMo devices and I suppose he might have gotten the X1 already.
By the way, what color did you order? I hope it ain't silver.

I'm very close to Ashford Dunwoody
Speaking of Craigslist, I need to find a buyer for my K850 soon.
X1 color: black of course!

And just simply comparing pic-to-pic/screen-to-screen, I doubt anyone could see the difference.

@matthewf01 & gforce23

Good to see some fellow Americans on here awaiting the X1 as well. We're all so close to each other too, I'm in Roswell, GA. I'm waiting to see what SE tells us about the X1a on November 3rd. I'm still hopeful that there will be a AWS 3G version that will work with T-Mobile so I won't have to switch to At&t.

Now, let me think..... Suppose you want to look at a black and white picture.
How many shades of grey with a 16 bits screen?
Ahem.... 32!
With a 24 bits screen?..... 256.
Which screen will show the most banding? On which screen will the same B/W picture show best?

I agree in practice that there is not much apparent difference, but imho pinguino2 maths is wrong.

Sure if you had a colour chart with all the colours lined up, then the X1 could show more colours. But all the display needs to show all 65000 colours is 65000 pixels in total (one pixel per colour). If you want to show more colours than 65000 colours then you need a display that has higher resolution. Both phones have more than 65000 pixels in total. Therefore iphone will be able to show more colours (depending on image complexity).

I might be wrong, I'm no expert, but that makes sense to me.

In practice, because iphone has only 150000 odd pixels, it will often have to drop pixels from an image (for example if the image has more than 150000 individual colours, then obviously it won't be able to fit all colours). Also, it's rare for images to actually have millions of colours. I checked a few of my DSLR images and most have between 100,000 and 300,000 colours.

I think in practice the difference will be negligble, but there will be times where an iphone display will be able to show more colours (and therefore less visible banding)

Here are also a few pictures. They are directly out of the phone. Judge for yourselves.

Thanks for posting those.

The video is disgusting. WAY too much compression. Imho VGA would be better at 15fps if it meant they didn't use so much compression. This is 3GP quality not mp4 quality. Completely useless.

I wonder if you would be nice enough to show us a qvga sample?

The pictures are okay, not fantastic, but better than I was expecting.

The X1 is SE's first phone capable of recording VGA video. Hurray!
Shame that the sound is only 8kHz mono.

There should be three encoding formats: h.263, mp4, h.264@15fps all at VGA. Is this true?
