With the exorbitant prices that retailers are charging for the K700, would anyone hazard a guess as to how much they would be asking for S700?

More than the K700, but less than the price of a P900 (when it was originally released) thats the word from the SE reps at Cebit and other sources. It'll be most likely priced the same as what the Z1010 is now upon its release.
I think in UK the S700 sim-free would retail about £350-£400, on contract, around £150-£300.
After a couple of months the price should drop much more than the P900's original price tag as the S700 isnt a smartphone, and isnt aimed more towards the business end of the market, unlike the P900. So you'd be able to get it free on higher tarrif contracts.
When it eventually appears on PAYG, expect to pay around £250-£300 for it.

But the phones European OS isnt finished yet, so they cant release it yet. Also, since the K700 has just been released they'd probably conflict with each others sales.

Back in March, SE said the phones OS was only around 60% complete. However, most sources believe it wasnt even that, as the SE rep seemed pretty misinformed about the S700, chances are the phones OS wasnt even functional since it was actually using the Z1010's firmware. You could also see how rough the design was, lack of branding, poor quality prototype case and lack of markings on the buttons. It also crashed a lot
Also, its only logical that even if the phone was complete (now) SE would hold it back to allow the K700 to sell enough units before releasing the S700, as they're quite similar in functions.
Another thing to consider is the value of each technological generation. Whilst developing new technology, for example the step up from 4k colour screens to 65k colour screens companies like SE incurr heavy costs which need to be recouped through sales. Before they'll release new technology (1.3mp camera, 262k screens) they need to generate enough revenue from each generation to make developing it worthwhile. This isnt greed, but good business sense. If SE were to release the S700 now, they simply wouldnt recoup the costs of developing phones like the K700 as everyone would upgrade to the newer model. The K700 sales would suffer terribly, and the costs incurred from developing the phone would put a large hole in SE's share value.
Another reason why they wouldnt release it is to allow its competitors time to release their own inferior models. This might seem stupid, but for a company like SE that has the more desirable phones it makes perfect sense. Look at the 7610 compared to the S700, it has a 65k screen compared to the S700's 262k screen. Upon the S700's release more people will want it than they did the 7610 since its more up to date. Because more people will want it, they will also be prepared to pay a higher price for it upon release.
Theres one thing ive always admired about Sony, they know how to be successful in business. They know how to deal with their competitors, they know how to time things perfectly and price them properly. They also know how to keep their customers happy. This is why SE is so popular now, Sony know how to deal with companies like Nokia, they've had 100+ years of experience.
