The HTC Wizard, HTC Magician (both sold under various other names), HTC Tytn, HTC Tytn II... all WinMo phones with a similar form factor, and all very successful (out in the non-SE world).

If you compare the size of this with any of those other phones I've mentioned, then you can see the WOW immediately. It's a very good size for a full Windows Mobile Professional device with keyboard. On top of that you've got a very high quality screen, and a promise of high performance on video etc - making it a class-leading device. If they get this out in the middle of next quarter, it will be *the* Windows phone to have, I reckon.
By the way, people are trying to make some issue out of the memory size on this phone - make no mistake, 128mb operating memory is
ample for a WM6 phone. Of course you could have more, at the expense of battery life, but it would serve very little purpose. The Tytn II has 128mb (it's one of the first WM6 handsets to go over 64mb) and you won't find anyone complaining about that - it's more than enough to run anything you like with no problems whatsoever. The 512mb flash memory is also perfectly ample - twice that of the Tytn II, and more than enough to install all the apps you're likely to want. Anything else you'll put on microSD - why wouldn't you? By the time this comes out, a 16gb card will be cheap as chips - this isn't memory stick prices remember - so you'll have all the storage you need on that. I wouldn't be surprised if they bundled a reasonable size card, but I don't think anyone needs to be too upset if they don't.

I think if X1 was a dual slider phone (slide up to reveal the numeric keypad, slide to the right to reveal the arc keyboard) that would have been more interesting.. Agree, anyone?

i'm regaining my faith in SE.
no one can deny that lately (last 3 months), things weren't going as the fans aspire them to be. i, among many others, just stated the level of frustration because we needed new better models.
X1, is my next phone.
the main competitor is the e90. and why does the X1 outrun it? because touch screen offers a good degree of control freedom. something that the e90 lacks.

So the X1 isn't anything really new other than the changed slider for the keyboard and this 9 Panels interface for shortcuts all the rest of the tech is alreday there in WM Devices and Toshiba have two new follow up models due for release as well. The Windows Mobile devcie market is crowded with manufacturers and devcies.
Personally i would rather of seen SE dump the Nexperia chip and get UIQ right especially as they bought UIQ just a year ago even though they've now sold half to Motorola. SE is UIQ and was what made it unique was it was the only touchscreen Symbian OS to date. Who knows maybe tomorrow SE will suprise and announce a fully specified UIQ version but supporting your direct competition seems a strange thing to do IMO.

Don't forget, HSUPA is also making its debut with X1, so "nothing new" isn't exactly accurate, and I'm sure their not giving away the other stuff up their sleeve since it is at least 9 months away from completion. Hopefuly it is released before it becomes obsolete since this is their make or break in the smartphone game IMO. I agree that they should've kept on developing UIQ but I guess it is a purely strategic decision as I don't think it makes sense either. Perhaps they truly wanted the X1 to be a breath of fresh air rather than be stuck again with an underdeveloped platform and ruin the whole experience, perhaps it would be implemented in the next Xperia models or even X1 itself when and if they have perfected the next UIQ version. I don't think they are optimistic in getting a fully functional and bugless UIQ platform by the end of the last quarter, and time is of the essence for SE as we speak.
