It was at 100% before I started the upgrade. If I plug it in to the mains to charge now nothing happens. There is no display - zippo!

Looks like you killed ur phone by unplugging it while u were updating, You will need to take it to an SE service center and get it flashed there, or you can try using Davinci as i belive u can restore dead phones using that (Read first post for links etc), SEUSII can not help you with dead phones.

I had the chance to test two w800s, one with R1AA008 and one with R1L002. I used the same memory card and the same mp3 songs in testing. The R1AA008 phone had the terrible hissing sound, the R1L002 – nothing! It is no noticeable noise when using the headphones that comes with w800 (same headphone used for testing on both phones). It is, however, some constant low background noise when the WALKMAN is turned on, using other headphones (Creative) on R1L002. Doesn’t really matter for me, I’m very satisfied with the w800 in-ear-phones.

I, off course, own the terrible R1AA008 phone. How do I downgrade? Will a SE service center downgrade? Can I use http://www.davinciteam.com ?

you could try upgrading to R1BC. My R1BC doesn't hiss.

@yngvewb:
Yes, you can downgrade using Davinci Team service.
Hissing noise is a well knowm problem with the w800i present in all firmwares after R1L002. You must choose between no hissing noise and missing the improvements of later firmwares (ie increased volume & improvements in photo and video quality)

well, my friend had a similiar problem, but when he plugs in the charfer, the display will not show a thing (like charging phone, the backlight won't even start)
+ he tried it out with my w800i battery still no go, while my phone works just fine . . .

As I said in my original post the SEUS had gone back to the main menu so it looked like it had failed way before I unplugged it.

I was trying to find a SE Service Centre. There were no details on the SE contacts page. WHere can I find the nearest SE centre?
