SE should have gone with Android faster, even on the Satio. Even Nokia knows s60 v5 is crap now.

I've been cursing SE since they killed off the best Os IMO and have been saying this 'new' Symbian Os is in trouble and now we know it is.
Great job SE!

But then, SE screwed Motorola over by enticing them to join UIQ only to ditch it and now Nokia played the same game on them. What a joke and it's on SE!

Its not just Nokia that works with it. Samsung and I think LG do as well.

Btw, it has 256 mb ram. Dont know where you came up with that 1 gb figure from.

lrn2read.

Virtual memory is hardly a bragging right.
Hardwarewise, everything else in that has been trumped elsewhere and Maemo 5 is yet to exhibit an app/developer base comparable to Symbian/WinMo/iPhone and hell, Android.

That said, porting apps from Debian to Maemo is supposedly pretty straightforward, so this may change VERY soon.

@se_love

Those two never heard any smarphone OS but SE on the other hand HAD a super OS so to me the other two were just followers wheras SE was standing on its own without having to lick Nokia's...

Nokia buys all of symbian's shares, turns it into an open source and then dumps it.

Samsung is following Nokia (according to Eldar) and if that is true we have only SE as the main player in high end symbian competing with Maemo and Samsung's mix of Maemo and their own 'os'.

Great move by Motorola to jump ship and concentrate on Android. I guess it's a case of 'we've been here before with UIQ and got badly burnt, not again' from Moto.

Now LG knows little about smartphone Os so I don't even see how they figure in this picture. I bet now they are in the middle of nowhere, confused and rattled.

What does SE have now? WM, Android and Symbian. Hmmm... only Android offers a chance at making it while Symbian is (fill the words/phrase). WM on the other hand is on a slow painful death. In a few years' time it will be there and insignificant. Even HTC are concentrating more on Android. Just look at where WM is compared to where it was and you realise that it really is a serious struggle. Some say that Window 7 will ultimately help the beleaguered WM but if you look at what it is up against you realise that that assumption is way off.

I see Apple, Google, Blackberry and now Nokia all slugging it out and Microsoft falling by the wayside. I have a feeling someone over at SE will finally realize that Symbian is a dead end and dump it like UIQ.

SF is yet to come out with a final version and the internet is already writing it off. What gives?

One of the most powerful S60 devices was launched by Samsung a little while ago, so they clearly are still on board with it. SE's product in that segment is coming out any time now. Nokia themselves launched the N97 and soon, the N97 Mini.

That's as many Android phones we have in the entire mobile world, mind you.

WinMo, as much as people love to hate it, isn't going anywhere. Microsoft has way too much leverage for that to happen.

For a developer, making apps for Symbian, Android and WinMo makes eons more sense as this gives them a better chance of penetrating the market (Multiple manufacturers, multiple handsets) than developing for Maemo 5 which is confined to one manufacturer's handful of models. Then again, Maemo may just pull off an iPhone like feat, so we have to wait and watch.

My point is, the whole deal about this dying and that getting abandoned is a bit premature and is a classic example of how the internet jumps the gun.

Now, you're one of the members that I have respect for here on esato but you just misread my post on symbian.

Reread it on the symbian part, I never wrote symbian is dead or dying but that it is in trouble and a dead end for SE in the sense that SE will be left as the major player in the high end stakes when it comes to symbian.

I suggest you go and read Eldar's article on Maemo and Symbian. I know Eldar writes some crazy things but that article sheds some light on what's going on.

While I agree with you on waiting and seeing what happens but on WM I see Microsoft losing too much and as I wrote it will pale in significance in a few years' time. You took the phrase 'slow painful death' literally. Read the immediate line after the above phrase.

Once again my previous post on symbian is related to SE not having much to gain by sticking with symbian. I didn't and don't imply that symbian is dead or dying but that it is in trouble.
