you can read all about it in the documentation..........................................................
But here ya go (copy and paste from
http://www.sonyericsson.com/webguide/p990i/pc/ae/ sections Contacts.........................................................)
Copying contacts to and from a SIM card
You can copy contacts from your SIM card to Contacts, and vice versa. With the flip open, do as follows:
To copy entries from Contacts to the SIM card
1. Mark the entries in Contacts.
2.Select Contacts menu > Add to > SIM.
To copy entries from the SIM card to Contacts
1.Select Contacts folder menu > SIM, to open the SIM card.
2.Mark the entries.
3.Select SIM menu > Copy to Contacts.
With the flip closed, use the More menu instead, and follow the same procedure. To open the SIM card, select More menu > View folder > SIM.
Note: Only 3G SIM card entries can contain multiple phone numbers.

Thanks but I thought you could save the contacts on the memory card not the SIM. I don't think my SIM will take so many contacts it only has 250 positions.

Looks good, but when are we going to get this new firmware? I'm starting to get sudden reboots in the last 2 weeks.

kalu, you are confusing the memory stick with the SIM card. You can make backup from contacts, calendar and tasks to your memory stick. Just remember that there is only one backup kept, a new backup replaces the previous one.

yeah. no worries. i knew about this, but i did not read the question properly.
but in case you have pictures and voices tags, I am afraid the restore is not fully functional. Some of these get messed up in the process

Ares thanks about the calendar I didn't know you could back up the calendar on the memory stick. Makbil answered my next question before I asked (a new backup replaces the previous one). I was hoping it would be better to restore from the mem stick rather than from the PC but Kalu says pictures get messed up in the process. The voice tags you loose any way during restoration of a backup from the PC.
