Hi all

Well if anyone wants to see how the X1 Screen will look go check out a Toshiba Portege G900 that you will find has the same screen and processor by the looks of it.

Nice try, but compare the size of these devices - the X1:

Size: 110 x 53 x 16.7 mm
Weight: 145 grams

And the Toshiba:

Size: 119 x 61 x 21.5 mm
Weight: 196 grams

In short, the Toshiba is a MASSIVE and frankly quite ugly brick compared to the SE - there's no competition there.

Personally i would rather of seen SE dump the Nexperia chip and get UIQ right especially as they bought UIQ just a year ago even though they've now sold half to Motorola. SE is UIQ and was what made it unique was it was the only touchscreen Symbian OS to date.

They're using UIQ in lower end devices now (G series), and they will be announcing a new P series tomorrow. I won't be buying it, but SE will still be getting my money

Who knows maybe tomorrow SE will suprise and announce a fully specified UIQ version but supporting your direct competition seems a strange thing to do IMO.

It's a very sensible move - they're bringing some quality and style to the Winmo market that they can take a lead on, and at the same time Winmo gives them a level of compatibility and OS acceptance that they know UIQ has long since lost. UIQ can still be a good, funky, consumer UI - but WM is best for business, both now and in the future. SE are just being realistic - no variant of Symbian is going to threaten WM in its proven markets now - sad but true.

just a question.

what is the difference between GPS and aGPS ??
does the X1 have a GPS hardware module embedded inside? does it work normally like any other GPS nav device?

thanks for your reply ( in advance )

@Mode

I don't know but did you miss the bit where i said that Toshiba alreday have two follow up models in the pipeline, sorry i am not into WM but i would be surprised if they don't have HUSPA and if expected release is 9 months that's a life time in Mobile technology. Even Nokia's Touch UI should be with us by then and who knows what that will bring. The thing with SE is when they announce something it is top spec but by the time they release it, it always seems to have been surpassed now a days it never used to be that way but is now. Also do any Networks even support HSUPA yet?

What bugs me is when asked if it is normal for to announce so long before release 's answer was in the case of the X1 it is to allow developers enough time to develop app's before it's release, so does that mean they have redesigned WM6 so much it won't run the thousands of app's out there or do think WM is a new technology all together or do the apps need tweaking to run in the 9 panels??

aGPS is real GPS, but it also relies on other available sources of information to help speed itself up and decrease start up and loading times. It still uses satellites, etc as usual, as well. There are better explanations around somewhere, I read them earlier today.

We're hoping. People have confirmed it, but I don't know whether or not to trust them! I wouldn't want to be disappointed!

From SE "GPS and AGPS white paper" located at http://developer.sonyericsson[....]obal/docstools/misc/p_misc.jsp

"The idea behind Assisted GPS is to decrease the start-up times so that it does not take longer than a warm start, even if the receiver has not been on during the last couple of hours. To achieve this, resources other than the GPS satellites help the GPS receiver to gain the information needed to find the satellite signals and to calculate its position.

In addition to GPS satellites and GPS receivers, the receiver in an A-GPS network communicates with an assistance server. Since the A-GPS receiver and the assistance server share tasks, and the assistance server has high processing power and access to a reference network, the process is quicker and more efficient than regular GPS."
