No, it's 3.5mm one, but different standard, named TRRS, that requires specific type of headphones. It's explained here -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRS_connector
EDIT: After I spent some time reading that wikipedia article, I came to the happy conclusion, that the TRS plugs are still compatible with that specific TRRS jack, while the opposite combination doesn't work.

They have changed from the world-standard to US-standard. A very good move imo. Now all the iphone headsets will work on xperia S.
Let me fix that for you. And who cares if the iPhone headphones gonna work? If you have enough money to buy Xperia S, that means you should have enough money to buy decent Philips/Sony/Panasonic/Sennheiser/AKG headphones for it, if you need such, in stead of buying that iphone crap.

Ah, world thx! Well incase you haven't noticed, all the big brands you mentioned make iphone headsets. In fact, the majority of headsets they make are iPhone headsets. Nokia and SE was practically alone with their standard. It was wrong of me to just say iPhone headset however, I mean the standard, not "apple made headsets". Sorry for the confusion

That's what I was just going to say.
I was sure it would otherwise have been very stupid of Sony to implement this type of jack.

Not impressed by the start up screen, its pretty boring. I would have expected the make.believe with the colours which fly into the logo, which is found at the end of all Sony adverts and promos... shame

Man, some of you are an insatiable and picky lot. Dude how often are you planning on rebooting your Xperia anyway - to "enjoy" the boot up screen?! Personally I'd rather be USING the Xperia to its fullest than to even care or notice what the boot up screen is!! Heck unless it flashes a hot women with bouncing breasts or spread eagle & singing any nations national anthem, I could care less if it even flipped me the bird!

Do you realize what you're talking about here?
- iPhone headphones ARE an industry standard now: just about EVERY major headphone manufacturer makes ones with the "ControlTalk" compatibility:
AJays
Jbird
Bose
Sony
Panasonic
Sennheiser
AKG soon
Grado soon
Apple (of course)
Beats by Monster
JBL
etc etc.
So you're saying you do NOT want to: Make/Reject/Repeat dial calls, Play/Pause/FWD Skip/RWD Skip/FFWD/FRWD Music ... switch playlists, heck voice control Google Search and possibly even Google Maps ALL via the headset while;
jogging,
cycling,
running,
train commute,
bus commute,
carrying groceries with BOTH hands full,
on a call while feeding your baby brother/sister/child ?!
EDIT: Let me also add the ability to hookup a Guitar and record directly into your smartphone, maybe possibly a midi outboard connection. Apple has completely expanded this TTRS connector beyond what we think.
Man .... I sometimes wonder with all the complaints in this thread where the common sense of functionality over design or over principle of what used to be has gone.

+1000!
People here are a 1000 times more picky than all the reviewers out there. People here whining about no improvement over Arc image quality when the actual people who took those pics are saying that Xperia S is superior to Iphone 4S and Arc S.
And I don't understand why everyone here expects zero noise at 100% crop from a PHONE camera!. Even basic point and shoot cameras have almost similar amount of noise as Xperia S shots at 100% crop.
Can everyone just stop whining and be happy that the last Sony Ericsson flagship is finally what we have been wishing for since years. The Xperia S is currently and will remain till the end of Q1 at least, simply the best smartphone there is. And the stuff.tv review says the same thing. Currently, Xperia S is in a class of its own.
