It seems like people(usually the technopiles and fanboys) are prioritizing excellent viewing angles while downplaying the display quality at right angles, Am I the only remaining user here who looks at his smartphone screen perpendicular to his face?

well, some people don't want to hold their phone every time they want to check something small, like for example, newly received sms and some share photos and videos with few people. those are the reasons i hear for wanting better viewing angles. listen to pocketnow criticism about this (36:21):

not a deal breaker but there is always room for improvements...

You right, but you need around 45 degrees without color and contrast degradation... At SXZ orange color go to yellow instantly. Just set wallpaper with tiger skin. Remembrer comparison SXZ and SXZUltra. All here said "wow what a difference!" And after all same discuss. Just like Xperia TX and Xperia Z. It is insane. Just put Sony same screen as SXZ Ultra and no questions here.

China is due for delivery tomorrow.
I"ll let you now what is going on with the retailing unit, in particular, the screen.

Producing cell phone is not just a technical work, its a business. The manufacturer needs to balance the performance and cost. For Z1'instance, it's easy for Sony to use ISP. But as a result, the cost will be increased dramatically. So Sony takes another way to lower the cost and keep the selling price at a certain level(the same as XZ though the spec. is much more premium).
Yes,the screen has caused some public arguement. So it' too early to say Sony is doing right or wrong. Let' wait and see.

while I am not really too fussed about viewing angles! I can understand some people who do find it important...especially if you plan on showing people photos and videos on your phone then people would be looking at different viewing angles...and for a flagship with such a lovely camera I am sure there are many people here who would want to show people photos / videos on the their phones!

Why can't Sony just use a SLCD. I've always thought that Bravia or that X Engine thingy were just pure gimick. Just to lets believe that they were actually putting some TV technology into their mobile phones. If it happens that SLCD was there from the start...not a single viewing angle rant could be posted in here.
