This had me confused too in the beginning. My P990 does have both the wpa and wep options if I setup a new account. I scan, select my network, P990 tells me I need to set up an account to access this connection, I do that using wpa etc. But when it tries to connect it fails. I have a feeling that physical layer of the connection actually is successful, however I have no idea why wpa does not work. Same settings as my notebook and power saving is off.
Have you tested so that you just start using Web or read email, without trying to connect to the WLAN access point from the WLAN app? For me, the connection just opens since it is the preferred one, when I do something that requires the connection.

Just did. Tries to start the Wi-Fi connection, after a short while GPRS kicks in (checked using Internet Connection, GPRS was connected). When Wi-Fi connects successfully, the normally dim Wi-Fi icon should become brighter, never happens with my wpa connection.
