It's all a question of positioning. At this moment SE are hedging their bets. They have the manufacturing oompth to weigh in with bulk good phones whenever they need to. Nokia sell smartphones like potato chips, but many of those smart phones are used in no more complex ways than candybars like K500 etc.
Many many nokia smartphone users don't even know they have a smartphone. Smartphone is still a niche market which SE are happy to service via the P series until they see more demand. The truth is Nokia phones are not in demand as smartphones, but because they have a wide range of phones to suit different users needs, whereas SE have traditional had a smaller range, but each phone feature packed.
They are changing this tactic with the K300/500/700 etc. and J series. to appeal to the common market.
I said it a year ago and I see no reason to change my mind: Smartphone is still not a feature that the average nokia phone buyer knows or cares about. Sure all you smartphone advocates on this forum are different, but you guys are more advanced phone users than the averages joe/joannes.
I'm with you guys - I'd love a K750 like uiq3 device - but I don't think that SE are in danger of losing the market race just because they haven't a good range of smartphones yet.
Now this s REALLY starting to sound like the "Have Sony Ericsson finally taken the lead in global mobile phone solutions?" thread

@max_wedge:
a smartphone is still a smartphone whether u like it or not. It doesnt matter whether the user exploit the power fully. (in fact a typical users may not even use the non-smart K750 to its full potential).

mib if the general public don't know the difference then what does it matter if SE market smartphones or not? If the general public don't even consider smartphone a factor in their decision to buy a phone then how is SE falling behind?
I'm not trying to say smartphones are bad. Infact I believe eventually all phones will be smart. But I think that day as much further away than you would like, and SE have nothing particular to gain in the general market by doing any more than they already do with regard to smartphone development.
Mate your logic on this issue as always is biased towards your own preference and has nothing to do with the real world market.
I'm not going to argue around in circles on this issue....that's all I have to say about it.

I agree with U max on d point dat "Nokia sell smartphones like potato chips" & "nokia smartphone users don't even know they have a smartphone"...but there r ppl here on esato asking 4 advise on which SE phone (will fullfill their requirement & fit their buget) should they get...& it always comes down 2 d point dat SE doesnt have dat phone..so they should shut their eyes..sell their soul & get d nokia series 60...ngage...no cam...but costs about $180...6630 1.3MPX cam...& costs about $350....SE P910....only choice...& costs about $575. So I really think SE should give some choise 2 its buyers.

has33, I concede that that is true... it is depressing for smartphone advocates who are also SE fans. The P910 is nice, but I bought the K750 instead.
I still think for the money and features SE non-smartphones are still better than most smartphones on the market. I looked into smartphones a year ago, and couldn't find one that suited all my requirements in a phone (the actual flexibility of a smartphone I don't need yet - I'm into convergence devices ie: phone, cam, mp3 player in one small form factor).
However it is true that if you need a smartphone or pda device, you need to buy a brick like P910 or go to another manufacturer.
BUT, like I said it's niche - at the moment SE are concentrating on appealing to the general market, not smartphone buyers. I think economically it's a good move, even if I myself would like a SE UIQ3 candybar.
